Opened up my post this morning and as well as the usual curse word from companies offering me credit cards I got a letter from Haringey Council. Penalty Charge Notice - Vehicle Seen in Bus Lane. Fine 100.00 (50 if paid early) Now I never drive in bus lanes so I was a bit perplexed by this until I had a closer look at the photo that accompanied the letter. These photos are supposed to prove that I was contravening the law. In the picture you can just make out that I am signalling, then if you look closely you can see the entrance to the car park that I was turning into! So, I am in the bus lane purely so I can turn into a car park - surely that cannot be an offence! I am about to write and make representation to them - ie defend my case. What are the chances that they will drop it? Money grabbing b'stds.

Martha Fockers. Are there any markings on the road etc. that denote a break in the bus lane for the car park turn? On a related note.... our local rag covered a story last week where the council made a busy street 'single white line' parking for it's entire length... meaning people could park legit. across the entrance to car parks & business premises etc. thus trapping the vehicles inside all day

good luck with it mate. that bus lane rule pisses me right off. I got done on my bike a few years back. I'd love to know why taxis and cycles can use the lanes but motorbikes cant. I was undertaking stationary traffic at the time as to overtake would have been suicide.

I have a confession to make - yesterday I was in Banbury to carry out a survey. Not being familiar with the town I was concentrating on looking for Parking/town centre signs I suddenly found myself in a bus lane. I thought initially I was in the lane for turning right at a set of traffic lights - & the queue of traffic along side me wanted to turn left/go straight on. Thing is once i'd realised what i'd done the people in the line of traffic wouldn't let me back out as they thought I was trying to jump the queue, so hopefully I haven't been snapped on CCTV - Oh the stress of driving on modern roads! It seems you cannot make a mistake these days without being penalised for it - and with the amount of information being relayed to us combined with the amount of traffic on the roads that you have to deal with - mistakes are going to be made Oh well - I hope your local council drop the notice Unimexsol. I'm sure writing a well structured letter explaining what happened just as you have done in your post - combined with a subtle threat of going to the local rag should do the trick ;D

Sounds like a trap to me, Sly, they are sent to annoy us. tell em your case, if they don't listen i'll happily shoot ther knee caps off or something as annoying anyway. Keefy totally agree; If they are going to have them only cycles, busses and motorbikes should use em, no taxis - thats a car with a driver! only prob is people crossing the road co caution woul obviously be needed. Big up bikes

That's bloody insanity, definately stand up the b*stards on that one, as Bo11ox says they'll look like a shower of eejits trying to explain that one to a judge, so they'll probably back down before it gets to that stage.

I got out of a SORN fine.
A month or so back I recieved a letter telling me that the shuv wasn't SORN. Within an hour I had a letter in the post back to them via recorded delivery stating that I had called the DVLA the day after purchasing the car (3 weeks before the tax ran out) and asked whether to declare SORN now or to wait until I had the V5. I was told to wait. I gave them the name of the CSA I spoke to (I always take names when I call such places) and the timestamp photocopied off my mobile phone bill.
The next morning I got a call saying 'sorrysorrysorrysorrysorry!'

I got one about 4 years ago on the way to uni, going down a very main road in notts which has the whole left side set for busses. I got a letter and a picture stating that i was driving down the bus lane when in actual fact my left rear wheel was on the divider line. I did nothign with and waited till a court summons came (nothing did 4 years on) and my licence is clean still.
they are total n00bs when it comes to it and to be honest its a waste of tax payers money.

I agree, definitely argue this one! I was threatened with a similar 'offence' a while back, they soon backed down after a couple of carefully worded letters though. It's just a pain that you're being inconvenienced by having to dignify the claims of these feckless wonders with a response.
They don't like it up 'em - enjoy!

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

I do, and I certainly didn't vote for them! (I voted socialist, I don't think much of the SSP but I prefer them by a small margin to our other parties.) The problem is that the British public have been trained into total political ignorance by years of propaganda and false consciousness we get fed, the result being most people are so fickle and sheep-like that all Tony has to do is say he alone can stop Al Quieda and make life wonderful and everyone elects him as many times as he likes. Good proof of this is our constantly changing views on armed police. After July 7, everyone was calling for more armed police to stop terrorists, then Jean Charles de Menezes got shot and we were all outraged by how police now had the power of life or death over us and wanted less armed police, now two police officers are tragically murdered and we're all for amred police patrolling the streets again. As soon as someone who looks vaguely powerful offers to tell us what to think so we don't have to do it ourselves we jump at the chance and follow them, bleating slogans all the way. Thus we have idiots and thieves in charge.

The numpteys that 'plan' the roads in Leicester have just added a bus lane on one of the main roads out of the city.... it goes right up to a roundabout, so at busy times it's full of cars waiting to turn left... if you do the 'right' thing and don't get in it you're trapped... Call me paranoid, but I truly belive that a lot of congestion is deliberately caused by schemes like this, so that the 'powers that be' can say "there's too many cars on the road, we must raise road tax/fuel tax/insurance tax ect..." ...got to go now, there's a big black car outside, and two men in black suits at the door... I won't be long...

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

if you were turning left, strictly speaking you should wait until there is a spotted section of the buslane or an arrow across it to indicate left-turners can enter it. however if it was just a minor entrance then there probably won't be, in which case you should just pull over a reasonable distance before the turning so as to not inconvenience the traffic behind you, and to make sure a bus doesn't try to pass you on ythe inside as you turn.
point this out to them and they'll drop it. if they don't, have your day in court then laugh when it gets thrown out.
and - £100!!! for driving on a pieceof road you probably paid for through your road tax anyway. you get fined less than that for car theft!
