well bin a bit busy. Fitting Dellorto twin 40's fnrr fnrr. A bit of pain to say the least! To fit em to a mk1 you have to tkae into account the position of the master cylinder. Hmm wht to do. So we tried this: thats a 4 way connector and a couple of new pipes. The master cylinder from a mk3 polo (sans power assistance - hope it works!) the reservoir then needed to be changed so we used one from a seat arosa but it was a curse word to get secured properly into the MC. So much so that it kept falling off and spilling brake fluid into the engine bay. grrr Still it gave me chance to paint the block, change the water pump and cam belt. painted the cam cover, polished the dip stick guide, polished the oil filler cap and cleaned up all the tupperware The bad boys had been stripped, cleaned, re-built and bodies polished. All from a book. i had never eveb touched a carb before this. I have amazed myself. i did spend most of the time being scred though that I might do something wrong! Anyway finished and ready to go on So got them on in the end. You need 4 hands but of ourse you can't even get one hand into the bay when they are in place. I think the most we managed was a quater turn on a nut at a time. Back breaking, soul destroying. But we got them on. And the car started and ran But.........one had a rattle that sounded like air was getting in somewhere it shouldn't. So strip em off again strip down the rattley carb and check everything, and put em back on again. Yep still rattles. I think it is a choke in the body rattling for some reason. Still they are tuned and the engine sounds really nice apart from the rattle. Dunno if they'll do anything except increase feul consumption ;D Any ideas over a rattle/popping noise? Or are you an expert and fancy a look? Come and see me!!

So given the fact I'm having to save for more Twin 40's as the rattle turned out to wear in the body of the carb allowing the venturi to move I thought I'd finaly get around to completing the rest of the ICE install, given that all the stuff is from 'old' projects, other cars or stuff bought for 'one day I may need that' type things and it was just lying around getting in the way. I'd noticed that even with just the 6X9's running I was getting a lot of vibration on the rear deck so first thing to do was sort that out. Strip of the thin layer of foam that had turned to dust (at least theres no rust here!) Add some vibration cancelling matting Next step was to add a decent board under the deck to help give it some weight and be able to mount the amps on it. I don't like drilling holes in the car so avoid whenever possible. There were enough holes in the deck to screw a sheet of MDF covered in carpet into place. This meant I could put the amp rack where I wanted and not be limited to where the exisitng holes are. Build some uprights and install a sliding self: Drill some holes for the wiring and cover in carpet. Install the 2 amps. One for the front speakers and one for the rears and the sub. Wire it all up trying to remember which wire went where  Make up some MDF speaker housings for the front, drill a small hole in the A post, install the wire shields from the boot of a VW fox, Send all the wires through, mount on the door panels, wire in the crossovers and mount on the inside of the doors and then put it all back together again: Then complete the bootjust loads of carpet and MDF really. Plus a lot of head scratching, measuring, glue-ing, mounting and swearing later: Just got to complete the side panels and find somewhere for the cans of tyre repair stuff now

So once again the idiot begins experimenting with suspension set ups. I've never liked the TA Tecknix set up on the back as it seems rather soft. I'm always a bit disappointed when the back end drops under acceleration  So I'm gonna try some coilies instead. From a mk1 golf so probably gonna be way too hard but we shall see..... A bit dirty and manky and..... Red springs. So after a bit of cleaning, polishing and painting: And all put back together again: So now just the fun of attempting to fit 'em, get em level and trying them out!

Well coilies on the back really means that one should have coilies on the front too ;D Good job there was plenty of overtime recently......... Apprently one of the bearings is on the way out and Joe over on CP said he'd chuck in a new bearing. So I think I'll get both the braeings done. Might as well. Definitely need to do some work on the 'anti stone in the brake' shields though Just got to hope the brake set up fits ok

really nice one this, everywhere your car is clean mine is rusty!
inarisilber is a cool colour but the paintjobs are always terrible when one of the panels is repainted once and it seems they all are!
nice work on the ice install, doing it stealth.

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments. So this week I've managed to get the coilies on the front and the back. Total time taken. 4 hours. I think me and me mate are getting good at this. Mind you this is the third time we've done it! Into the garage at Robs place for the work to be done. His garage is a little bit wider then mine and means we can work on both sides of the car without falling over stuff all the time. Wheel centers off and the big nut loosened off ready for removal Drop the arb. This time remembering which way around the drop blocks go. (ahem) Strip down the brakes and lodge caliper up in the inner wing out of the way. Brake the ball joint and then remove the bottom joint. I had refurbished the original 'stone-no-go-in-brake-disc plates' earlier. hmmm smooth and no rust! Build up new struts with disc and 'plates' and re-attach. Job Done! Despite having to clean up the threads for the top mount YET AGAIN (what do people do to them!) total time for front end.............. one and half hours. I think all the practice is paying off  So that was yesterday. And today the Rear! First the all important spacer to make the struts fit! Jack the car up, stick her on axle stands, undo the top nut in the boot. If you think it was tight before try doing it after building a sub enclosure! yep another quarter turn at at a time job. We were lucky though as I have a ratchet spanner that fits and we could just about the hold the shaft of the shock in position by hand and release the nut. Phew Drop out the old shock after undoing the bolt at the bottom. Piece of cake as we'd added loads of copper slip to the shaft of the bolt last time! and replace with new and shiny one One thing we did notice was that the coilies are much shorter than the old set up. It does mean that when you jack it up the wheel goes straight into the air rather than the 2 feet of the spring dropping down first  With the backs set at the lowest position with the helper springs in place I was expecting it to be low .............. the wheels just hit the arches. In the end we took the base of the adjuster up about 150mm from the bottom of the shock. Using verniers we then measure between the arch and the wheel. each side set the same at 52mm. As a double check we used a spirit level on the roof of the car. Everything looked ok B) Went out for a test drive. So much better! no crashing noises any more Yippee. No back end drop under acceleration and much smoother less bouncy ride. Yep cost about £500 all in but I finally like driving her again. Any body got any ideas how the brake lines are attached to the front strut on a mk3 by any chance? And the all important finished stance  I like the back but I reckon the front needs to come down a bit further. Which is a bit of a pain as the fronts are adjusted as low as they go. Dagnamit. Any ideas?

Looks bloody ace this car!
To get the front down 10mm, take one of the lower spring platforms off and just wind the other down against the weld at the bottom to stop it moving at all. I did this with my 106, worked spot on.

The current wheels' offset might be a bit much to drop the front much more without scrubbing the arches when the wheels turn and are in bump. However, you can buy shorter springs from places like Rally Design, not too expensive either. You would of course need to ensure you have enough travel in the damper unit if you lower it anymore. The brake hose goes through a simple rubber loop that in turn fits onto the tab on the bottom of the strut housing. You'll need to find someone breaking a mk2/3 Polo to get a pair.

Thanks mate but I ain't taking a grinder to those front struts ;D Ta for the info chaps. mk2polobloke I reckon she'll take a bit more at the front. The is still a bit of room even with the full lock on and all my, not inconsiderable, weight on the wing. I'll bear it in mind though mate. cheers Glad your liking her anyway. Cheers Ian

When I went to put the top cap covers back on to the new front struts they wouldn't fit as the new struts have a longer thread. I did have a look at billet ones but then had a thought 'Why not make some?' So in what I like to think is the true RR ethos I got the thinking cap on............ So take one Coke can (other types of coke cans are availible ), Chop chop Bit of filing so I don't cut my dainty paws again and drill a hole Add one shiny tyre valve cover and a plastic silver sparkle die dust cap Some cutting and filing later Add some paint to your coke can and put the top bit in place Then add to the top of the strut and screw into position eh voila (or something like that anyway) not too bad for a total cost of £2.69. Better than the cost of the billet ones I was thinking of anyway  Hope you like Ian
