I don't really know where this thread is going even as I type it so bear with me. Are high resolution photos making cars look better than they really are? Are we being dazzled by mega mega-pixel cameras? Or have we just been deprived in the past? The genesis of this thought came from agonising over these photos trying to work out the elements that had gone into the stance of this; ![](http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp238/labsmajor/CROWN/251200692_61962a8292_o.jpg) ![](http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp238/labsmajor/CROWN/251200690_dc868b7e8d_o.jpg) ![](http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp238/labsmajor/CROWN/2875472752_594ece6aff_b.jpg) Then seeing this pic and realising that it is the age old combination of cut springs, painted stock wheels and whitewalls; ![](http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp238/labsmajor/CROWN/IMG_0399.jpg) Has he changed the car in between those photos being taken or are the higher quality shots somehow make the wheels look bigger and more solid (hides the slots) while making the whole package just look better? Second example is this. ![](http://www.firstfives.org/photos/dale_koe_1978_530i_06.jpg) Federal bumpers, plain wheels, nondescript colour and yet.... ![](http://www.firstfives.org/photos/dale_koe_1978_530i_11.jpg) Same car, 7 years less camera technology ![](http://www.firstfives.org/photos/MikeKoe530i_02.jpg) So the question is Am I crazy? Are good cars being let down by bad photos? Are average cars being elevated to god status through photographic talent? Should your next mod be a quality camera? Does it matter either way?

I think good photography can definitely make a car look better - or perhaps it's a case of the quality of the photography making the best of the car. I think it's down to a combination of things, not necessarily a 12 Megapixel camera - I think with the right setting, angle, lense and photographer, a kick-ass photo could be produced from any camera. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Anything can be made to look better with a decent shot of it. Post production also helps.
An ugly car can be made to look cool if you find the right 'angle', and a decent car look terrible at the wrong angle too.
It's all perception.

Two of those pics have been treated using the 'Orton' technique too, which makes things look 100% more awesome

if you crouch down and take a photo close to the ground it will look way better than when standing up right and looking down.
in short its the composition and the like which makes a good photo, the camera is fairly irrelevant in alot of ways

Yeah, I vote for the "it's better photography" idea. But it's no biggie, as long as we realise that the cars we dribble and ooooof over aren't perfect. They're just as photoshopped as the women in glossy magazines. But who really cares? It's not like it actually matters.
My last trip to the Summernats I had the opportunity to see a whole heap of top end cars in the flesh. And they were flawed. But the cool part was that it wasn't "omg the pictures lied". It was a case of "hell, these guys do amazing work, and they're having the same problems I have".
The only time I have a problem with those perfect photos, is when I'm buying a car. And then I don't believe a photo anyway.

As said above, choice of composition is always going dictate how good a photo ends up looking. No amount of photoshop can compensate for a well taken shot. Angle, lighting, depth of field, focus....as well as many other factors make up a photo. The 'more successful' photos look good because of the angle they were taken, the use of 'thirds' where the subject is not in the centre of the shot (subject in the centre can make a photo look bland and ordinary - almost 'background') The nice blue sky also helps in the first two shots and gives good shadows which adds contrast/enhances detail. The first two also have the contrast increased (photoshop) and quite possibly the saturation too. Increasing the contrast will make the object appear more 'solid' and details become more striking. Saturation gives the blues a much richer look. I would also guess that the first two have also been sharpened somewhat...not a bad thing at all - I like sharpened images when it comes to cars, you get to admore the details so much better. In amswer to your question, yes, technology does play a large part in the amazing photos you see these days. This is not down to fancy high mega pixel camera's though - large megapixels only mean you can print images larger without losing detail. All of the above shots could have been taken with an ordinary point & shoot camera or a 35mm film camera. It's the way the shot is taken (good photography) and what is done with it after that gives the results you are talking about. I love my DSLR camera even though I am not really that used to using it yet....but wouldn't give up my little cheapy point and shoot for anything! Some of my best shots were taken with my cheap 'disposable' little sony camera! I know these aren't exactly 'great' shots, but these were taken with my little point & shoot with 1 megapixel (a LONG time before I'd ever touched an SLR) and have had NO photoshopping....straight off the camera.... ![](http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i251/bruceholder/L300/My%20Motor/MM01.jpg) ![](http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i251/bruceholder/Z1/Z1005.jpg) I was pleased with them anyway ;D

There's a fair difference between that first set of shots alright, still a cool car either way but the first two pics defo give it a better look. I think the comparison between them and glossy mag photos is good too. I reckon that the camera does matter but like any photo the person behind the camera/computer counts too. Give me a flashy camera and i couldn't take a fantastic pic! I have a plastic Diana+ camera that is a very basic camera taking pics on old 110 medium format film (yes that's right ***ROLLS OF FILM**** kids) but even t makes for much cooler pics: Digital Camera: ![](http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb272/magnumleigh/magnum480.jpg) ![](http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb272/magnumleigh/magnum479.jpg) Diana+ ![](http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2642/3864301725_5f9998c6dd.jpg)

The secret makign it look low is to actually run your car that low. Mine is nothing special but it looks much lower than most other Anglias because... you guessed... mine is the lowest ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Photos make the paint shinier and hide all the chips on the wheels though, no doubt about that.

![](http://209.62.197.26/photos/magnum480_rework.jpg) Though with some post-processing it's possible to achieve that "Taken in 1951" look. I'm by far a potatochop buff but that was kinda easy to generate.

i think you have a very valid point. a good camera can make an otherwise average car look 10 times better than it is! taken with a 3.2 mp compact camera ![](http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q233/g40jon/retrog003.jpg) taken with a nikon d40, same car albeit in a slightly different guise ![](http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q233/g40jon/DSC_0697.jpg) I'm sure you'll agree the second picture does make the car look better

From what I can see the improvements in this thread are post production and composition. It doesn't matter what camera you've got if you're standing upright behind a bush taking a picture of your car, which is placed slightly to the left on your allocated parking space at home. ;D ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
