Thats crazy talk, but then again my charade one stopped working, found out how much they are, 300 new and 150 for a reconned unit. Its because its one of the crazy small nippon ones.
Anyway being a skint student i pulled it to pieces and fixed it my self, modified alternator with green wires that run round the ouside to transmit the charge! hehehe frankenator!

Let us know how it goes, i don't really know what else to offer....have you tried butts?

Forget about the stealers! First things first, go get your engine code, should be on a sticker in the boot somewhere. Could be the same engine as in the mk4/5 polos and mk2/3 ibizas. So you could get one for that and fit it yourself. Try GSF, euro car parts, bosch (or whoever makes the alternators) Or as someones said, you could probably get your alternator reconned, and fit it yourself. If all else fails.... Email: martyn@vagparts.com Phone: +44 (0)1793 487700 Fax: +44 (0)1793 487701 Web: www.vagparts.com Good guys, and can get things cheaper from vag, and its genuine. £500 is prime extortion, as expected from a stealers though.

Well I had an Octavia up until a couple of months ago. What led me into buying the car was the "VW build quality", well I think VW must have lost the plot, either that or the workers in the Skoda factory just don't give a curse word about quality control. It turned out to be far less reliable than the £500 Sierra I part-ex'd for it. Yes it was a high mileage car (160k), but I've had Sierras with that sort of mileage and they've been reliable to the point of boredom. Incidentally, I needed new struts for it. When I phoned the dealer, they couldn't give me a firm price. they quoted me "between £80 and £120 each, plus VAT". I phoned my local motor factor, and they sold me a PAIR of Bose struts (i.e. original equipment) for £85 all in!

£500.00 is a bit steep, I'd defianatly take the alternator off and have it reconditioned at a local electrical engineers, The only reason I can see for it being that price is because of the aircon, not many 1.4 vw engines have it in comparison so if they had to reenginer the alternator to fit it the unit cost price would be higher due to lake of demand
Oh and by the way the price of ALL parts you buy from a main stealer dealer are fixed by the manufacture, you may get a discount if you ask nicely but most of the time dealers hands are tied by the threat of losing the dealership!!

A few people on the CPUK forum have been moaning about a bit of PSA skulduggery called a FAP filter inserted intot the exhaust systems of all new Pug/Cit diesel cars. Not mentioned when you buy one apparently and not shown on any service schedule but wears out at 48,000 miles and costs over £1200 to replace! Just at the point when your four year old car is now worth around £3000. made to make you consider p/xing car for new model...hmmm let me think!

Firstly) I have to agree with everybody else...£500 is just crazy (what happens when car reaches 'Banger period/age' do you scrap a car just for the sake of an alternator?). Secondly) 104ZS It DOES make you wonder (however I wonder what will happen to all these trade in 4 year old cars?). Thirdly) May I say how pleased I 've been with my main dealer...sorry to be different But I've found that the ones near where I work have actually been cheaper for some parts. Two recent examples have been my local Toyota Dealer. On my one Toyota the alarm started 'bliping' to itself for no reason, apparantly after a few years water gets into the siren and wrecks the electrics. Due to it being a Manufacturer fit Cat1 system I thought it best to have it repaired/replacement buy Main dealer only due to the fact it keeps my insurrance down. So with a deep breath I go in... VERY HELPFUL they were, Mechanic comes out and spends half an Hour checking everything ...no charge for his time , car is booked in, it required a new Toyota siren (and yes I was given old one afterwards), plus modification to stop water ever getting in again, plus all the striping down and fitting... cost £104 inc Vat all in and due to job being done by Toyota it is covered for 3 years. To me I thought from a main 'Stealer' that it was a good price and service, plus Toyota in question is not exactly a recent model (and at the end of the day I know they only really want new cars to work on ). With other Toyota I needed a new battery and for a laugh I enquired at same Toyota dealer (expecting silly price ) ... only £44 ...cheaper than any tyre centre or Motorfactors in the area ...oh and will fit it for free (I know fitting ain't no problem but it was a nice gesture) recode ICE and check electrics/alternator charging system etc., all for free (again guranteed for 3 years ). Again second Toyota is no where near new. So my findings of main dealers is don't always presume the worst ...I did (which was wrong I know )and have been pleasantly supprised. Also they realise I can't afford a new car (which is their main purpose) but still helpful.

New cars do, indeed, suck, IMHO. My newest car was an Escort 1800i Ghia saloon, under six years old....low miles with fFsh....by the time I got it it had had a new starter, alternator and fuel pump (£300); Then when I had it, another starter, a coil pack, three sets of HT leads, and the immobiliser / alarm went off randomly, including immobilising the car on the way to work three days in a row! All before it had reached 80k. The Ford dealers' answer to everything: we'll plug it into the computer sir, that'll be £100 plus parts plus labour. Sod that, I decided to buy my current beater for £200 and said I'd scrap it when it let me down. That happened for the first time this morning, one year and 10,000 miles later! Even then, sorted in ten minutes, on the side of the road, with just a screwdriver!
The government gives us Bullplop about how old cars are a menace in terms of pollution / safety / whatever, and offers tax incentives to buy new cars, which is more about propping up our dubious, possibly unsustainable economy than it is the public interest. Plus people are taken in by advertising which convinces them they're inadequate if they don't have a shiny bland-mobile. One of my previous employers wouldn't let me go to see clients in my old Civic, because I'd "never be taken seriously in an old banger".
End result: manufacturers can shaft everyone, knowing they'll put up with it, and still come back for more in three years time!

thrasher in da house: anyone like to hazard a guess how much that will cost to get fixed at SkodaHere in Sweden prizes on spareparts for Skoda are STUPID!!! The cars are quite inexpensive (compared to similar VW & Audi) to buy new and here in Sweden resale value on Skoda is higher (in %) than Audi, VW and even Merc but when it comes parts the prizes go crazy. The fuel pump on my 2000 Skoda PickUp gave up and VAG wanted 4.000SEK (£283) shortly after the computer gave up and at 7.000SEK (£496) I just blew a fuse, good thing we here in Sweden have something called www.bildelsbasen.se where 90% of the breakers have their stock available so you just punch in your lisence plate number and up comes the parts avialable, I found a fuel pump for 800SEK (£56) and the computer fore 1.500SEK (£106) and the parts arrived the day after, good deal..... Yes I'm happy with my Skoda PickUp but would NEVER buy or recommend someone I know to buy a new Skoda, get an Audi or VW, pay more initially but save huge monney when it's time to change parts on it, specially if you are looking at a 2000 to 2003 modell car..... VAG pushes the Skoda brand as economical but when it comes to parts & service they'll get you.....

Agree, I worry about the government, do they know what they are doing most of our cars are not economical but neither is powering up a factory building so many new ens and scrapping em at the end, and the new cars still need new parts, only until they are unfashoinable or worth less than the parts...

But what do people class as old? A lot of morons I know think that 5 years is (and I quote) "Getting a bit old now and need to think about changing!" To me any car that is under 10 years old is still NEW and under 5 year old I class as brand SPANKING NEW

HAHAHA.....also, we've been given the WRONG part number by skoda........one for a 70amp alternator I've removed the plastic splash guard earlier ( in the rain ) and found out it is in fact a 90amp alternator, got the part number, phoned a local VW specialist, who can fit us in on Tuesday ( Skoda needed TWO WEEKS ), whos quoted £200 " all in mate " result...... Would be doing it myself, but the weather is foul and i've got too much on my plate at the moment !!! and agreed, under five years old is spanking shiny stupid new !
