Perhaps i should explain.
My gf, in her wisdom, bought a 2001 Skoda Fabia 4 months ago, as we were expecting a child and needed a four door - despite my reservations that it was a lot of money and i would prefer something that i could work on should we ever have any trouble.
Well, the other day, with a sarcastic " beep " the battery warning light came on, a quick check with the multimeter revealed no charge - screwed alternator - at 30,000 miles.....
So, off to Skoda to get it plugged into their computer.....and lo, a buggered alternator code came up......i always trust my nose...
anyway, anyone like to hazard a guess how much that will cost to get fixed at Skoda ? go on...........
oh, and it broke down due to flat battery on the way home and had to be AA'd

Well, the problem is, you don't seem to be able to get them from anybody but skoda, apparently its specific to our model, a 1.4 8v with air con........another useless/needless bit of cr*p. Got a mate in the trade looking into it now.........no way we're paying that. I'm reeling. I really am.

Utter BS!
If you walked into your local Bosch spare parts emporium with the offending item in hand, you should be able to get one off the shelf.

Earlier on this Year i bought myself a Brand New Focus 1.8 TDCI, nice inside usual cheap looking outside. But ahh my got this car is being sold now, Dodgly gearbox that grunches in every gear(no matter who the driver is), its had a New exhaust becuase the old one just broke.
New aircon unit twice.
So becuase I paid for ti outright no finance I think I am getting rid before I loose even more. and my next choice is A LANDY yup short wheel base Defender about a M reg me thinks. Slow ass Dirty Diesal Yerr baby

Fugg me you're not short of a few quid are you! Buy a brand new car outright then sell it after less than a year, thats fuggin insane man.
Anyway I would have thought a decent auto electrician ought to be able to repair/recondition the alternator?
Failing that you must be able to get one off another generic VW blob in a salvage yard somewhere, that 1.4 engine is in polos, golfs, seat Ibizas, defo no need to spend 500 snoot. To55ers!!!!!!!!

I'm with Mr_B, any competant auto-electrician should be able to re-wire it (or what ever it needs). I can`t see why they spec the alternator different for a 1.4 Polo with A/C

Bad luck thrasher, that'll be that legendary VW reliability then?
On this subject, my mum and stepdad regularly buy new Fords, because my uncle works for them and they can can get a decent discount. Their last Mondeo, a 2.0 Ghia, has just been p/x'd against a new Focus, and it's value has gone from something like £16k down to about £5k. It's only 3 years old with about 20k on the clock. Scandalous....
Got to be a bit careful what I say about reliability right now - Skyline shed its fan belt yesterday and Laurel still waiting for a new hose after old one split so I'm using the works Astra van, the shame of it. I think peripheral stuff going like this after a long time is acceptable, certainly not going to cost £500 to put right!
