Inspired by rwelfare's purchase of a Belmont GLSi, which coincided with a couple of interesting sightings over the weekend, thought' I'd start this thread.
What I want to know is other RR readers' thoughts on what we'll be admiring in a few years time? If possible, not just a model but your suggestions on a sleeper within the range. Again that Belmont is a case in point - pensioner's colour and bodystyle with some sporting underpinnings, more subtle than the obvious Astra GTE. Cheaper and less likely to have been thrashed too.
My first thoughts:
Honda Legend coupe - saw a lovely one in Norwich at the weekend on a 'G' plate.
Mazda 323F GT - the funny 5-door hatch with pop-up lights. We had one for several years, in an ideal world I'd have kept it but there were Datsuns needing to be bought.
Montego - I saw a 'C' plate saloon, high-ish spec possibly a VdP? Stood out as somthing I hadn't seen for a long while.
Over to you! Pictures would be nice.

Saab 9000 could be a goodun - this shape one though... We had one for ages, I saw one yesterday and a great tide of nostalgia came over me...and you don't seem to see them very often any more? Even our 2.0 seemed pretty lively, in a saloon way. Bet the turbo would be the best option though Low n' sleek and black...

Sierra 2 obviously along with mk5 3i's seems random and unlikely but i'm sure of it give it about ten years though ;D

Almost retro looking now (quirky looks)! Good luck finding an unmodified / unthrashed one though! (edited to explain ) Adam

Subaru SVX. Love em to bits and I reckon on the cusp of retro. I hear they're a pain to maintain. Charlie

The VW Corrado. Apparently everyone thinks its a future classic. Wouldnt mind one someday soon.
Honda Preludes, the early boxy ones. Maybe the Vauxhall Calibra ? Who knows??

Like the Volvo 480 suggestion. There was a very clean 480GT recently at a local Volvo specialists, late model with clear front lenses and cross-spoke wheels. Seemed a good buy for £695.

Yes! That’s just what I was gonna say. That car is a 100% cast-iron future classic, in fact it may be one already. Much more so than the gowky and unremarkable X-power coupe. I would fugging love one. ’04 model ZS180 hatchback too, both superb cars.

All RWD Volvos that aren't already retro (the 2 series is getting there in the past few years, but the 7 and 9 series haven't really got into retro territory just yet, which is a shame because they're just as good as the 2 series, they have a slightly different character to the 2 series but they still have a very definate character, plus they're bloody bulletproof, and reliability and character are an unusual combination in a car, usually there's one or the other. Also the 850 T5, the S60/V70 and S80 and the new S40/V50 probably will be retro too but it'll take a little while longer. Moving away from Volvos, Saabs have always had a bit of character, so I reckon they're destined for retroness. Maestros and Montegos will probably get more accepted, and I'm not just talking about the MG ones that people like at the moment. There are still a couple of old Austin Maestros running about round my way that are in bloody excellent condition, I think the rough ones you used to see must have all went to the scrappies years ago because it's only tidy ones that are left are all immaculate, and I can't help thinking that they'd be a perfect retro runabout these days, I'd love to stick an 1800 K Series on throttle bodies and otherwise tuned in one but keep it looking more or less stock, that'd be good for a few surprises! I'll post more up if I think of them.
