A friend of mine has been in an accident (other guys fault) and has claimed 100% back off the guys insurance (around 1000 pounds). He is planning on buying a retro car for cheap and spending the rest on restoration and a few modifications. Any suggestions what he should get?
Thanks.

For that money he's best to go with something that's a bit borderline retro or not particularly popular, that way for less than a grand he'll get something road legal that doesn't need a tonne of restoration. What sort of classics is he into?
Personally I'd recommend something like a Lada Riva. Worth roughly as much as a Toffee Crisp, even in immaculate condition with a fresh MOT, great for customing and motorsport, they can be made into pretty great rally cars, plus he'll have something interesting and unusual, and seeing as they're worth very little, as I said he can have a tidy car for his money, rather than buying something that's mainstream and cool, but sick as a parrot and needing major work. Also, I'd advise a sort of a rolling project, if he gets something road legal and uses it as a daily driver all the time he's working on it then he can enjoy the motor while he's working on it, even when the cash isn't around to do anything to it, if he buys something that's off the road and tries to do all the work before he puts it back on he won't be able to get out and drive it until he's finished. Besides that I like feeling the difference to a motor as I work on it, if you do it all at once you don't get to appreciate all the little improvements you made.

A grand gets yer a RWD J 70's coupe. You'll just have to be patient, but worth waiting for the right car. A Mitsubishi Sapparo, TA40 Celica or Datsun C210 Skyline would be the ones, if you just want looks. If you can't wait around for them, a Mitsubishi Starion, an eighties Supra or S12 Silvia would be even more fun.
If the japanese selection doesn't interest you, then I'd go for a clean E30 Beemer.

I am sure after a few months counselling you could come to terms with the fact that there are more cars around than skodas, and come to appreciate not just Ladas but also possibly/hopefully Yugos as well.
