Hiya lads. Need some help with a project I've embarked on. Years ago my aunt gave me a little old folding bike which I used for some time then abandoned when I got my BMX. Anyway this week I scored a Briggs and Stratton 3.5HP motor out of a lawn mower and I want to try and fit it to the folding bike. Sorry no pics as of yet. Anyway straightway I ran into problems(beside the motor needing some TLC that is) The drive for the mower's blades means the crank on the motor is perpendicular to the ground. To drive the bike I need it to be horizontal. I have absolutely no idea how I;m going to make that happen.I've though about it for ages and can come up with nothing workable. Any ideas?
By the way, since the bike has no crossbar, the motor will be going over the back wheel. The rear of the frame is the form of a carrier. Pics tomorrow to help you understand it all.
Thanks for any input
Tom

if the engine is above the wheel the easy way to connect the two is going to be a vee belt. so you will have a pulley on the engine and another on the wheel with another two which turn the belt 90 degrees. sorry no pictures but some peugeots used a similar system and i have seen a beetle with a porche fan conversion where the belt comes off the crank going up then turns 90 around pulleys to the fan which was horizontal above the engine i have probably confused you more than ever but it is doable and i hope someone here can bung up a few pointer pictures ttfn glenn

I was just thinking lads. Could the engine be flipped onto it's side if I moved the petrol tank and carb to keep em the right way up? Would the oil pump still work? Sorry but I know nothing about this type of engine
Nother thing occurred to me just now.Seeing as this is a direct drive engine every time I stop the bike it's gonna stall. I thought maybe a coaster sprocket on the crank would let it idle when I'm stopped. Am I right?

I think you are gonna be curse word in the wind with that engine - You'll need a centrifugal clutch fitted, and some way of turning the drive through 90 degrees - for what a small 2 stroke 47cc pocketbike engine will cost, it might be worth just using one of them - The entire engines sell for about £35 on ebay, and have plenty of power for this sort of this (as demonstrated at RRG on the bike we made!)
Plus, the engine will be a lot more lightweight (they are about 4kg) and easier to mount.

what about getting a rubber wheel on the crank. With the engine on the carrier like in your pics. Then making mounts so the engine can be swung to the side of the tyre. Probably with a control cable. Carrier looks strong enough to weld on a metal plate for that. So you can move the engine away from the tyre would mean no rattly chains and hub mods. Also you could get a plastic storage box to fit to the carrier. Hide away the engine from the Plod.

Dave where's the fun in that? besides to object of the build is to accomplish it for free,or as little as humanly possible. Thanks for the link mason! Alec thought of that. Was gonna use one of them wheels from those little scooter things.
But yesterday a mate put a flea in me ear and today after an hour spent trying stuff out I came up with a workable idea. Really chuffed with it but I'll show y'all when it's finished and I'm sure it works!

i reckon a angle grinder is a cheap way of tuning the drive 90degrees once the motor is taken off,,,,,,,,also if a v belt was used between the wheelhub and the 'angle grinder output' then you can have a manual clutch by way of a brake lever controlled belt tensioner,,obviously that'd mean fitting a pulley to the hub,,
