ben,my landlords pretty clued up when it comes to this kinda thing- he converted his stables/outbuildings into a bungalow for his daughter and son-in-law, and has put a couple a couple of caravans on site too for others who like a similar lifestyle to me, so hes familiar with what needs to be done to keep the council happy in terms of declaring dwellings/changing use of buildings. when I asked him about doing it he said it would be no problem, just get on with it and do it and by the time id got it built it would be OK-ed with the council. afaik there was no inspection. he said it wouldnt cost him anything extra (an increase in council tax but a drop in rates), so he isnt even charging me anymore- just a bit extra on bills cos I obviously use more now.
thanks grizz, I like the way I'm living now. I'm much happier than I ever was with a conventional live in a house/have a seperate workshop setup like in the past. I know some people see me as beneath them for how I live, but I'm not embarrassed about it. ( you should see the looks on their faces when they're at the workshop and ask where I live, and get the answer 'here', with a wave of my arm about the place.......) I cannot see the point in living any other way, and to be quite honest, wouldnt want to.
Nice to know it's not that hard to do then, thanks. As most people here have said, I would love to live like this (same feelings about TV/radio/laptop as well..) but I fear The Good Lady would be less than pleased if I replaced a sofa with an engine crane. ;D That said, if the living area is up to her standards, then I can't see there ever being an issue.
I've always wanted to convert a victorian factory.. Workshop on the ground level and then living space in little rooms off of a mezanine floor.. Pipe dreams, but one day...
