oh no, i really want a Marina, i like the design, but today i fell in love with this : image stolen from autoshite..... ok, a suntor camper might be the most expensive way to own a marina, but what i really would like to know, how good/bad are these actually ? Would it be a shock for a VW nut like i am to drive in one of those ? Or are they great fun ? Which would be the best choice, which should be avoided ? We didn't have them over here obviously, so i should be looking to buy one from the UK..... or did the dutch have them, too ?

Yes! Buy yourself a Marina!
Get yourself a four door saloon 1800cc in brown, because its cool! No, seriously.
They're a bit of RWD fun, they rot like every other car does, and people will make all kind of piano-dropping jokes about it because they all watch top gear.
Go for it, dude! ;D

Suntors... hmm, should have been looked after reasonably well, fairly low mileages, biggest thing to look for are interiors; bodies can be repaired, but interiors can be expensive to fix (especially the front seats/bed as they are specials) but not to VW levels. The lift-up roof can be iffy as well, but it depends on what moulding you get as later ones have different shells that sit right over the roof of the bodyshell and if you're lucky you may get the additional bunks that fit in there. Running gear should be 10cwt, some were turned out on 7cwt (car) but they were usually built to the personal spec of the first owner. The Classic Camper Club and the Marina Owners Club should be able to help more. TBH, its amazing how much kit could be squeezed into such a small space! Go for it!
Tell ya what, that would look good on a set of JDM 13" alloys...

My parents Marina, circa 1990, was a 4 door 1300 in sandglow.
It wasn't quick and it didn't have sparkling handling, it had a bit of rust and those amazing BL disintegrating indicator reflectors meant the indicators were constantly failing.
But it did have one trick that kept me coming back for more: it would break away on a wet roundabout at near walking pace and go completely sideways, completely controllably. I've never since driven a car that was as well-behaved while sideways.
My advice, if you feel the lurve, act upon it. Just get a contract drafted when you sell it: " I will not sell this car on to a member of the Top Gear production team... "

Go for it, dude! ;D fortunately there is no Topgear over here and people will like the car as it is a"classic english car" .... they might make some Lucas jokes ("inventor of electric darkness" etc..) but i could live with that.... " sideways sounds good; i think it is similar with all old cars that have a certain reputation (or where people make jokes about); it was the same with all my old Alfas, everyone could tell you what will go wrong, but nothing broke (maybe as it was fixed in the previous 15 years or the really bad cars have already gone..) ... so i'll have to keep my eyes open .....

Didn't know we had these in Holland, but both are fairly local to me.

how cool is that, a 1,3l automatic ? what happens if you give full throttle, does it move backwards ? ;D though the condition looks very nice, i saw a lot of old cars in norway being in good condition... i think i have to call Agent P. for that....

Arrgh I need a marina in the fleet! You remined me. One of the cars I remember loving passengering in in the 80's with me dad. not quite sure why, the smell, the wavy light interior. Dunno but i want one. Yes they are meant to be a bit cruddy compared to other offerings but who cares if its just for a bit of fun.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

80mojo has got a Suntor Camper for sale. I know it's a project, but don't know what it needs.
