Over the years my council tip has been really good for me, Today, I dropped some old curse word off, and as usual hed a wee look in the scrap metal skip, sitting on the floor of the skip was a 12" surface plate, greased and a sheet of greased card stuck to its face, next to it was a oxo tin full of tipped turning tools, mostly sandvik complete with lots of boxes of disposable tips to suit, all for the princly sum of, "Gis a Fiver guv" surface plate has a tiny bit of rust on it which has allready been WD40d and scothchbrited off, and TBH most of the tools I have allready gone to a mate as they are too big for my Toolpost, he was happy too, Dunno what it is about this tip, but I have had some goodies from there over the years, Full set od Dunlop D1 alloys, a pair of 6"!! lotus steels, Mk1 capri panels, including a MINT 3.0 bonnet, 3 Motalita steering wheels that were being used as bases for Microphone stands, a couple of 611 X-flow engines, one with a superb Swaymar head on it, Never any Rover stuff!!! What have you lot in my computer found over the years???.

My local council don't allow that, it all goes down the chute out of sight into monster skips.

Never found anything but I put the back axle from a 1300 (Triumph) in the local tip. Wonder if that ever came of any use

I don't have any luck with my local dumps - way too tightly controlled these days (although I did get a Suffolk Punch lawnmower and a tiny B+W TV a few years ago). Where are you? Watford isn't that far from me, and I could do with finding a friendly tip... James

Good luck doing that round here, grumpy sods won't let you take anything and you can be waiting over half an hour if they're messing around with the skips as they won't let you in. They're changing to a new waste company soon though - genuinely hope they all get laid off, as the standard of service is enough to make you just launch all your waste off the bridge into the river Calder.
Shame really as back in the day I had all sorts from the tip, including train sets and computers!

Good luck doing that round here, grumpy sods won't let you take anything and you can be waiting over half an hour if they're messing around with the skips as they won't let you in. Thats the regulations for running a council tip, under new regulations our local tips are not allowed to sell anything off the site. They also have to clear the site of members of the public before moving any of the skips around.

been scavenging at my local since before i could drive. I've had: Honda PC50, Honda C50, a bmx, countless amps, record decks, speakers, tellys, petrol mowers, CBs, the stuff up there is SHOCKING, its like most people have never heard of freecycle. the guys have done quite well out of me over the years. The amount of stuff that gets landfilled instead of reused, like wood is frustrating. I even transferred a load of 2x2 out of some womans car there the other day because it was just going in the skip.
They should make it law you have to offer stuff on freecycle before taking it to the tip!

I remember when I was a kid I went with my dad to Bidston Tip and while he was offloading I spotted a load of 80's posters with the likes of Duran Duran, Adam Ant and their ilk. I pocketed the lot (about 50) and then went home and sold them to neighbours, friends for 20p each! I recently got a 17" monitor a few years ago, but replaced it with two hi-quality Ilyama 22" from work, which also recently went up the tip (I sold one for 25 quid). More recently, I took my MR2's old, rusty exhaust to the tip, chucked it in the metal skip and spotted this leaning against it! Trade!!!! Cleaned it up nice n shiny: And it went straight on my old MR2. Was really loud, think it came off a Beetle or similar. It's strange how possessive the council is over stuff that has been given to them by the PUBLIC. You'd think they wouldn't be so arsey over it, it's not like they bought it, or aren't going to make a profit out of it fer christ's sake.

Was at the local place a couple of days ago and spotted a few junior mountain bikes in the metal pile. I asked the chap, but he was having none of it - "cant let you take anything - against regulations".
Its in the middle of nowhere though, so I went back after hours, jumped the fence and took them anyway. I cant abide seeing good stuff go to waste. The first was in pretty decent nick - needed some adjustment to the gears etc, a new brake cable, blew up the tyres and oiled the chain and its good to go, The second will require a few more things, but just cables, tubes, hand grips etc, so will be done up for under a tenner probably. The third, I havent looked at yet.

Well they make alot of money from the scrap metal.. I think they are mega sensitive to people rummaging through skips incase anyone gets injured. When I was younger I used to come away from the tip with more stuff that we went in with, the workers there always let me take it for free too (I was about 10) I remember seeing a very rare limited edition Raleigh chopper, it had racer handlebars and shimano gears. Excellent condition, too. My dad wouldnt let me take it though!

Never had much from my local tip TBH.
The people at ours seemed a bit feral - I was doing a combined unit / tip run and had my Watanabes in my boot, matey wanders over and starts eyeing up my stuff.
Bloke: 'Any rubbish?' Me: 'Yeah, the stuff I've just chucked in the hole?'
Bloke: (Takes a VERY close look in my open boot) 'What about them wheels?' Me: 'How about f**k off?'
I did see a really old Hovis sign and a full Sega Game Gear boxed and with 6 games.

Took a radiator to the dump today, and in the metal bins were 2 Huffy Green Machine bikes which looked brand new . Main reason I remember them, is because they looked a bit like SOC's crazy trike thing ;D
