	Just picked up a very old non folding Dawes kingpin to build a cruiser. It has a Sturmey Archer 3 speed, but won't go into 1st. Any ideas on how to ajust it? Will get pics up asap. Matt

	They have an adjuster at the back where the bowden cable end threads over the little chain that goes into the axle. I think first is where the cable is pulled through most, which suggests you need to tighten the adjuster a bit - a few turns should do it. www.sheldonbrown.com/sturmey-archer.html#Adjustment Sheldon Browns site is excellent at showing you how things should be done "properly" (If a little too properly!)

	When you look at the metal pin the tiny chain terminates on, I think when it's in second, the end of that pin should be in the .. middle of the hole. I assume you've found the maintenance nipple wotsit and drowned it in oil? Is the spring nice and springy? I'd take a pic and draw arrows all over it if my bike wasn't borked and not-here. They're a notorious to adjust, and I've set mine so it won't go into first anyway - because if it can go into first then it leaps off into neutral at random when in third. Which I didn't think was possible. So I'm probably doing it all wrong... Usually whilst cutting up a bus in front of kings cross station. Only little old ladies need a first gear.

	Ace link, thanks! 'If you hold the trigger halfway between middle and high gear, the hub should disengage so that you can spin the pedals forward without going anywhere. If it freewheels forward in high gear, the cable is to tight or has too much friction to release properly. If it freewheels forward in middle gear, the cable is too loose.' Oh. That's what's happening. Hm.

	I got a bunch of Sturmey Archer cables from Halfords last year. They are universal. With the circular end for the twist grip and the thin rod end for the trigger. I'm thinking of selling those cables. Maybe your local Halfords will have them. I had to search for ages for them. heres a thread on the Grifter website about hub strip downs www.thegrifterstop.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=187 Ive had trouble with the pawls and there springs. The pawls rust up and stick. The springs that make them engage in the hub shell arent very strong and can break. So its good to strip and lube the pawls. Bit fiddly to get the springs back in though.

	Had a couple of hours in the garage so this is nearly done. This is similar to what it looked like as standard (but a newer model) Jobs done: Bent front forks to lower the front Seat stay chopped, chain stay bent to lower the rear. Seat stays shortened then rewelded. Front brake removed Fenders removed Chain guard removed (wanted to keep it but wrong shape now :-( ) Bell removed Front fork bearings cleaned and re-greased Side stand cut down Jobs to Do: Chop a couple of inch off of seat post Get the Sturmey Archer 3 speed working Fill and prep the frame Respray in same colour but with heavier metallic Respray original decals Pics Hope you like Matt

	A couple of inches wasn't enough. Chopped the seat post down as much as possible and now it looks a lot better. Matt

	That's pretty funking cool. Just needs paint, polish and slick tyes. You could even make it into a fixed gear with no brakes, so it's really nice and clean looking (it's not like you're gonna be going up hills on it anyway!)] Or paint it metalflake black with white wheels (spokes too) and tyres, and polish up the brightwork.
