Me and Jo moved into our new house last October, one of the main draws to the new house was the parking and double garage at the bottom of the garden. However the garage was nearly entirely constructed from an asbestos. So one of our priorities was to remove this and replace with something safer. The original asbestos bunker. 2 weeks ago this was removed by a local specialist. Now when replacing a garage you might as well make it bigger, this meant the base had to come up , good job to as it was only 2 inches thiick in places and would not have survived long. Friday the digger and dumper arrived. big pile of rubble brmm brmm Found some parts in the base as well , looks like previous owner may have had a viva too.

8am saturday the concrete arrived, and 4hours of shovelling and dumper driving followed until we ended up with a 6 inch thick 21 foot by 21 foot base. now got 2 weeks to wait for the garage to arrive from scandanavia. Hopefully arriving the day after we get home from the Nasc Nationals .

Very cool project.
How did you get the Asbestos removed, and how much did it cost? I ask as my garage is made from the stuff, as are a rake of buildings around here!
From what I've read - Asbestos is fine as long as you don't drill into it - it's the dust that caused the problems.

when me and Mightymork (Roy) and sasky removed roys garage it was simple. we spoke with the local council who said that that we could dispose of it at the local waste transfer site. all we had to do was give them quanities and they gacve us an alloted time spot when we were to deliver it. once there we had to unload the aspestos our selves whilst everyone else waited out side! no charge and a quick solution

Had a few quotes to get rid of the asbestos, council said they would collect it if it was all wrapped in plastic for £30 a sheet, not bad till you count about 35 sheets!! and we still had to dismantle it. Got quoted from £1300 to £2000 to dismantle and remove. The blokes who turned up did not have an asbestos suit between them (one had gloves, another a suit but that only lasted 10 minutes as he done the majority of the job in a pair of shorts) , but its up to them at the end of the day , we got the paperwork to say it was diposed of correctly and a clear back garden.

Ah yes, I've seen their site before. I've sent off for a quote but I expect it to be well over my likely budget.

We are erecting it , had them e-mail me an assembly instruction book before we ordered to see how difficult it was. They reckon 2 days , 1 for the main building and 1 for the roof , so hopefully should be ok . Have the father in law helping who is pretty handy with wood , and also the trimmer who done Jos' viva. Will let you know as it happens to see how it goes .

Very nice looking one you've ordered. Promised myself one someday. Problem is you get carried away and end up looking at the ones with a summerhouse and sauna on the back! I really like the look of the wood compared to a brick one and I am a closet greenie at heart!
Re:Asbestos - the tip at Ardley, near Bicester accepts asbestos as well. If moving sheets I would buy the disposable suits and masks, load on a trailer, bin the suits. Drive up there, new suits on, unload, bin the suits. Asbestos is not worth messing with and if you get the dust off your suit onto your car seat you could be asking for trouble as you sit in an enclosed box with it for the next 10+ years! #
Worst thing I saw up there was an old bloke pull up in his Volvo, get out, put a mask on and start unloading. If you've been confined in your car with 10 broken sheets of the stuff for the last 1/2 hour then sticking a mask on when you get out is p1ssing in the wind!

Looks like a cool place. Did you have to apply for planning permission. I'm in the process and it's quite frankly a royal PITA. Half of the planners don't seem to have the faintest idea what they're talking about! Anyway, Looks good! Oh, and how did you lay the base?

Yes we did need planning permision, Jo done the paper work and I drew up the plans , 6 weeks later permision granted. The base is 6 inch thick concrete , dug down 6 inches , shuttered it then poured a lot of concrete.
** update in a few minutes**
