Just picked this up the day before yesterday, a 1980 Honda CB50J! It looks great, but thanks to the previous owner having it in his garage for 7 years, it´s got some problems running. It's a 50cc 4 stroke moped. My plans: - Get it running nicely again - Add some extra power - License plate - Some other things... Pics!:

Nice bike! It's not really a moped though is it? No pedals, and it's not even a step-through scooter either. A proper motorbike with a 50cc engine, and much better off for it!

man thats rare. i totally wanted one of those when i was 16 and searched high and low for one, back then in like 1989, and only found one, which was no good, so can't begin to think how few there are around now. i wouldnt mess with it if I were you. Want something faster? buy a CB100 or CB125

That's an extremely pretty little bike! <whine>Why does everyone else seem to find all these brilliant little bikes lurking at the back of every garage they see and I never find anything!</whine>

Yeah! Keep it original as I think the majority of CB50's were white or blue. The CB50 looked like a proper bike too. My GT50 Suzuki had a cable operated front disc too. It was ok unless it was raining........or going over 20mph..........or the rider was over 3 stone ;D Seriously though, I weighed 9 stone when 16 years old and it was borderline then. Don't know how it would cope with the extra 6 stone now

very very nice you will struggle to get extra power out of it though as a friend of mine had one many years ago and tried all sorts to get more fizz out of it with only slight results but it may be possible to use xr75 bits to pep it up a bit ps i have only ever seen 2 cb50j and they were both green and it is possible it was the same one as there was a gap of several years between sightings also it was quite something seeing my mate riding his as he is about 6 foot 4 ttfn glenn

Today I bought a new battery, as the old one was dead, gear-oil and a new spark-plug. Tomorrow I 'm going to clean the carb, fitting in everything else, brandnew fuel in the tank, and it should be running again then, if it's all going well! I'm keeping it orange! I think of replacing the flywheel, because this one is limited, so there isn't any power over 8000 or 9000 rpm. Maybe another exhaust too, because this one isn't that pretty, and limited too. I'm for as original as possible, and if i'm replacing anything, i'll keep the original parts! I found this one at a Zündapp dealer who got it from a german guy... It was pretty far from home, tbh. It's found somewhere in germany, put away in a garage 7 years ago... And indeed waveman, it's actually a motorbike, but because of the 50cc engine it's possible to get a moped-licenseplate for it. Yoohoo! Hmm, i'm about 6 ft 3, but I love those things, I don't care if it looks stupid! ;D

Thanks for the replies! I got it running again, but it's not running well, not at all. If you kick it on with full throttle, it stays in like 1500/2000 RPM, that's round about idle speed. If you run it on, it stays also round about idle speed, but it'll get you forward. In 4th gear i did about 13km/h.. So i need to make a few more adjustments today. I fitted the battery, all electronics work, it's even got a brakelight! Didn't think it would have one. I think i'll clean the carb even better than yesterday, yesterday i only raged 10 bar of air through the thing.

IT RUNS! After changing the air filter, I've fitted a new carburettor today, and that seems to do the trick. It's a bit too big, though. It's running 55km/h now, and top RPM is 12000. The sound is fenomenal! Now i have to adjust the carb. so it stays in 1500 RPM idle speed, and it's all fixed! Video soon
