Cruise control would have stopped Mr Policeman zapping me from a motorway bridge this morning.. I'm clearly too used to finding the 'optimum cruising speed' on old cars like my Herald (about 60) because it means breaking the law in my MX5 (probably got the radar gun thingy pointed at me at 80ish). (not a whinge, just an observation of crossing between drastically different cars ) I much prefer simplicity though I like comfy seats...

First thing to hit the bin when I did the Mustang was the air-con. Second was the cruise. Stupidly I fitted leccy windows but these might end up coming off also. The PAS may well get fired as soon as I can find a manual rack. It's all just more stuff to go wrong. In answer to the original question; yes AK, it is your age.

I am sucker enough to buy one of those Lexuses that park themselves when they get cheap enough. I just love toys and gadgets. If the car ain't fast enough then you need more power. TBH I don't think I want that stuff in my "old" car though. You can't trust an automatic choke in a car that age... Certainly retrofitting would probably be more cost and effort than the results make it worth. Cheaper to buy a 8 or 9 year old BMW/Merc/Lexus/Cadillac... BB - I might be interested in that cruise control kit. You can still buy them, but with modern looking buttons and such. Lee, betcha didn't pitch the AC and such in the daily though... ;D

AK - I shall bring it with me when I come around later on. Tis very "period" ;D
I don't think I've ever had a car with air con... or cruise control for that matter! The Saab has PAS and leccy windows... that's about as posh as I get. ;D

Certainly retrofitting would probably be more cost and effort than the results make it worth. Cheaper to buy a 8 or 9 year old BMW/Merc/Lexus/Cadillac... That is the argument that says you should just buy a more modern sporty hatch than fit a V8 in a Morris Minor.... shame on you Akku! Imagine a nice W114 Merc with those soft closing doors, modern air con, heated seats and all that jazz.... lovely.

I know its missing the point in many ways but the difference between that and the V8 Minor is...
A V8 Minor (or whatever) would likely be faster / quicker / more "visceral" than any hot hatch you could buy.
My experience of attempting to "luxuryfy" older, non-luxury cars is that they don't quite make it as well as a modern luxury car would. OK, you'd probably do better if you start with a 1950s Cadillac than a Morris Minor but hey. I'm sure it can be done. You need more skill, time, resource, equipment to pull it off.
So am I now saying because its hard its not worth doing? Shame on me!
I think in reality the way I'm looking at thngs is that for a daily I want a full luxo package and will probably mean well used luxo barge bargains like my LS400 for that duty. the "toys" need to be retro (whatever that is) and are morelikely to be "back to basics" type rides. Purely from the practical point of view that it would take years to build a car te equivanet of one I can just go buy and then spend my time/money on my existing fleet which needs to be less compromised.
And whoever asked, I am getting about 23-24 MPG from the Lexus.

I drive an auto now for my daily as I have aged enough to appreciate cruising around effortlessly. I'd love heated seats in both of my cars, I'd love cruise control on the daily Golf, I already have PAS. I don't want anything else though. Nice idea though HW

I was talking to VIP about this at the RR@The Ace event. I really want to lux up a retro car. Full air con, electric everything.. those awesome Merc doors you can't slam but they close themselves. All those goodies. I wonder what is home retro fitable. I reckon aircon can't be too hard. Electric adjustable/heated seats must be possible? Get an entire car with all that stuff from a salvage auction as a donor - that way, the systems are all already integrated together. In fact, probably use the entire donor loom & as much of the running gear as possible too Indeed, find a new S class that's been punted hard or rolled, and transfer all the techno-gubbins into a fintail!

Pah, who needs new fangled gadgets on their cars, you should all drive a car like the Toledo..... No exterior mirrors, no hazard lights, drum brakes all round, push a button to pump the windscreen washers, no side repeaters, no head rests, no rear seat belts, no radio, no rear fog light, and currently no synchromesh on second ;D Pah - that's luxury! My '51 bug has no seatbelts, either in the front or the back no indicators (just a trafficator each side) only 1 brake light (and no fog lights or reversing lights) no synchromesh on any gear no windscreen washers no fuel gauge (it has a fuel tap instead) no exterior mirrors no brake servo.... One of the great things about retro's is that they're not overloaded with all the rubbish you get in modern cars.

have to say ever since owning an Omega elite with all the toys, my brain was kind of like "meh" to toys in general! I found it didnt add anything to my ownership experience and the sheer weight of everything only took away from the driving.
But a full toyed out retro would be cool.

When I get time to work on my Rekord, I will gladly fill it with luxuries. There's good donors, like 80s Beemers or Benzes, or old yanks, for example, that has most of the goodies, but just electric and not electronic which makes for an easier swap in most cases... Since most cars electrical systems starts with a 12 volt battery, most things are actually possible to retrofit as long as you take everything that's needed...

The only modern feature I wish I have would be ABS. Cadence braking is all well and good in theory, or on an empty road, but doing it whilst sliding towards the back of a stationary solid object? No thanks. Well that and cupholders; I've owned 15 cars now and a grand total of one had them as standard!
