Alright guys, I'm looking to upgrade the lights on the mk2... its got the 4 headlight grille like a golf gti or whatever.. the two inners only come on -on main beam... so could i use A hid kit on the outer two (dippeD) with only a dipped? as some of them are only a single beam.... as at the moment its:
headlights on = just the outer two on dip full beam= outer two go to mainbeam and inner two come on
would it be legal to run a hid kit as the inners act as a main?

To be 'truly' legal, any lamp fitted with HID bulbs must have a washer system fitted. Most cars retrospectively fitted with HID are illegal, but get away with it.
My GS300 had HID dipped beam, and 'normal' main beam on the inner pair. You don't want main beam HID really, as you're compromised when trying to 'flash' your lights, due to the start-up time of the HID.

I will get round to finishing it at some point

If you have conventional bulb type lenses you will also throw some "interesting" light patterns around and other road users will probably hate you, hidplanet.com is a good source of all the info you are likely to need, I ran them in my probe for about three months and got on quite well with them and I ran them in my frontera for 2 weeks and hated them,so it's a suck it and see scenario oem parts hybrids rather than kits seem to be the preffered way to go as far as reliability is concerned. whichever way you go try and find out what your local plods appetite for them is as I know they can be quite agressive with them around here hth

I've got these for sale: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=pfsw&action=display&thread=65237So of course, I'm going to say they are good, but they actually are. In a traditional, conical round headlight they gave a good pattern, didn't dazzle and generally worked spot on. It's square or oddly shaped lamps they most often cause issues with. They're yellow so don't stand out as PIMP HIDz INNIT! and I've ran them for a few months fine, and a mate has had a kit in for a couple of years now. Washers and levelling are required by C+U for a new car, but not on an MOT ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

the mans right, the self leveling and washers are only required on cars that have them fitted as standard when new. even so I can think of a couple of cars with standard hids that don't have this also. my car and many others have gone through MOT's without any problems.
ive been selling these since 2007 and not had a single issue with any of them or had anyone complain and the like.
so long as they're set up properly you shouldnt dazzle anyone, its only ones with the wrong beam angle, if its out just abit it will be alot more noticable due to the fact that the light is that much brighter.
I have H4 kits by the way if you want any, 6000k colour temp

That's fine for the MOT. BUT, please get some HxR bulbs as opposed to the Hx derivatives. I know people claim the others are fine on normal lights but I have yet to see this true on most cars. It's bloody annoying for the rest of us where it looks like your beams are on ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) . Basically, the Rs are designed for the patten/reflective headlamps and generally dazzle alot less. However, before you do any of this, I would get the upgrade kit off a MkII Golf which adds relays (lights are run off the battery I believe with the relays then) in and brightens the lights to no end as they are getting closer to 12-14v as opposed to 6-7V. It's what I'm planning to do to the MGB with its crappy indicator stalk currently takes a shedload of current through it LOL.
