Whilst looking through stacks of brochures for photoshop potential, I found this: Eh?! It's definitely photographed in England, loads of pics with other UK cars in the background, double decker buses etc. U-Reg?

cant be Gib, their cars just have numbers and no letters. and Gib is one scary place to have a car! Their roads are like out paths - and EVERY car has scratch and dents!

If only I could get paid for posting on here ;D The only thing I can think of is that the Fiat press cars were registered on August first or whatever, and whoever made the plates up didn't realise it went from T to V... That looks like London to me...

Maybe it was intentional, so the ad's didn't look dated as quickly as they might with proper registration plates.

quote often the ad people are scared of using a random selection of numbers and letters in case it gets back to the person who actually owns that reg and they get upset or something daft. so in a lot of cases they'll advertise for people who own really old registrations (WXY 123 or so on, the pre-62 ones) and ask their permission, or the car company will have a batch of registrations to use. example is Mitsubishi often have MCC or CCC suffix plates.
looks like in this ad they've just deliberately used plates that will never be issued, to get around the problem that way.
the last one with the roadworks sign looks like it's taken through a window, and you can make out the reflection of yet another U-plate car.

No, they are FIAT 124s, pre-Lada ;D
It's not a reflection in that last pic, it's the pic on the other side of the page showing through! Thin paper, obviously reflecting the thin steel used in the real cars ;D
Thing is, if they used plates that were never issued, then they couldn't legally have been driven on the roads to take those photos could they?

well, technically no - but then you can't drive on UK roads with your badly fonted numberplate are there no other countries with XXX 111 X format plates?

the two cars in the top pic look to be taxed - and theres other info on the windscreen
i think the reg is what youve said - changed slightly so not based on a real plate - changed just for the pics - have tried putting alternate regs into the rac finder but nowt

Cool pics Darren.
My personal theory is fiat marketing not realising the t - v change, making up pics for the brochure/publicity with 'new' plates on them, and not especially caring about the legality.
Looking at the location identifiers (LP / LM), the cars were registered at London/Stanmore...

I think you're close to the truth Panda. Fiat press cars were always registered in London, for example Mazda used Kent registered cars, Datsun Sussex plates etc - no doubt something to do with the concessionaires being based in the plates locality.
I suspect that the real plates would be registered with the L,M or N suffix, judging by the years of the cars. No doubt the work experience boy had to remove the originals with 'U'......
My god, I need to go out more.
