Merry christmas Oldbus, good to hear you made it out of the wrecked Touran alive. I say fit a tow hook to the Capri and use that full time ;-) Cheers mate, used up 6 out of my 7 lives Funny you should mention the Capri i was going to fit a towbar but didn´t have time last summer. I´ve ordered a new daily and have a hire car for a few weeks so should be alright ;D I gave the side door it´s final coat of primer this morning so turned up the heater to get it dry and promptly spent all afternoon outside preparing the Merc for the engine swap - well at least it´s not freezing anymore. I´ve measured it up and it should fit in quite nicely - i suppose i should have done that before i bought the car but my memory served me well I´m taking the wiring loom to pieces one stage at a time, checking inbetween that the engine still starts and runs..... The glowplug relay, starter motor and alternator are sorted, all i need to do is get the ignition switch sussed and removed - i´m not a very good electrician but i should have the loom reduced down to the absolute minimum tomorrow so that i can remove the engine and box ....hopefully ;D

My first job today was to finish off the wiring loom for the van. All i´ve done basically is chop off everything from the Mercedes wiring loom except the bits for the alternator, starter motor glowplug relais and ignition switch. With the ignition on the front wing and the engine still starting and running i then removed it all from the car and labelled it up leaving the leftovers for the scrappies With it still being light outside and not raining i then whipped out the engine and box... ...so next job up will be to drop the front axle on the van and remove the broken 24V & box

Well with the diesel out of the Merc it was time to turn the van around so that i can remove the engine and i want to be working in the garage the next few weeks and not in front of it. This is what the ramps look like... With the van out in the freah air i wheeled the Merc engine into the corner of tha garage as i won´t have enough room later once the van is in and jacked up. Next job was to get the van up in the air and safely sitting on it´s purose built stands... and then disconnect the brakes, steering, handbrake and whip out the front axle Next job was to disconnect all the electrics, gearchange mechanism, exhaust and all the other cräp that was still connected to the engine and then drop it down on the jack. Still find it hard to believe that it fit in here... ;D So here´s the old and the new ... I´ll give the enginebay a bit of a clean up tomorrow and whip the sump off the 24V to see why it blew up on the way to the Gathering last year

Dave
There is one thing I don't understand, once the car is on the ramps does it just drive onto the upturned angles, or do the ramps get retracted, up the angles with the car on top

Gosh you doing a great job there. There must be something in the water with all these engine swaps.Do you have a lot of trouble with insurance when you change engines and body.

Gosh you doing a great job there. There must be something in the water with all these engine swaps.Do you have a lot of trouble with insurance when you change engines and body. i don't know, where the transporter will be registered in the end, but the insurance is the smallest problem over here. Each car has a type number for the insurer, and they calculate insurance based on this number. If you take a 55 BHP Golf for example and fit a 2,9 VR6 , you'll be paying insurance for the 55 BHP Golf, and if you have a 2,9 VR6 Golf and fit a 55 BHP engine, you'll be paying VR6 insurance... modifications do not affect the type number from the car... strange, but true....

They´re pretty much the same height mate give or take a couple of inches - the fun will start trying to get the sump to fit around the front axle.... Dave There is one thing I don't understand, once the car is on the ramps does it just drive onto the upturned angles, or do the ramps get retracted, up the angles with the car on top Tony, once i´ve finished playing around with the engine and electrics the back will be getting a flatbed out of 30mm hdf. The ramps are then underneath the "wood" and the van on top" - if you get what i mean) Gosh you doing a great job there. There must be something in the water with all these engine swaps.Do you have a lot of trouble with insurance when you change engines and body. Cheers mate, no not really, Jürgen explains the system quite well - the insurance is the easy bit---not the TÜV though. Guess not, if you don't tell. Shhhhhhhhhh ;D

After clearing up the garage and dragging that old bootanchor 24V out of the way it was time to see if the Merc engine actually fits the hole.... Well it does but...... that´s not good enough unfortunately. If you look at the next photo you might be able to tell what´s wrong.. you got it? Well it´s not that easy as the front axle is missing but if you were to fit it you would see where the problem lies.... the sump is in the way of the solid beam axle...oops After lots of ums and arhs the only way to get it to work is to set the engine back about 12 inches. To do this i´ll have to chop the bulkhead a bit but nothing too dramatic. Apart from that everything should work alright, i might even be able to reuse my homemade engine mounts from the 24V So it´s out with the anglegrinder tomorrow methinks ;D Cheers, Dave

Thats a big 'ol lump of diesel! That shouldnt have much trouble dragging the truck+car around I would have thought. Nice work so far Oldbus Steve Cheers Steve, it´s only got 72 BHP but will go all day, if i was to drive around the world i´d do it with this engine fitted to something interesting ;D I see about the ramp, that makes perfect sense now, I knew you would have a cunning plan Tony Not so much cunning mate but the simplest way of doing it in my books Great work as always, your motivation is second to none! Cheers mark, much appreciated. here´s a little update from todays antics.... As decided yesterday the only way to get the diesel to fit is by moving it backwards a few inches so after measuring it up carefully i attacked the bulkhead with an anglegrinder... Before.. After.... Which then allows me to move the engine back a bit... which in turn gives me enough clearance for the axle.. and allows me to use the original Mercedes radiator and gearbox oilcooler... so to sum it all up - i´m pretty chuffed with everything so far. Tomorrow i´ll refit the front axle just to make sure everything fits and start making up the engine and gearbox mounts. ;D
