Ok all you Dubnuts ;D How much of a ar*ehole job is it Looks like I have got to do one on the Syncro before it goes back out to the alps for the winter It get hot pretty quick but then cools off after about 10 minutes, I think its weeping slightly, as I can smell that sweet smell of Glycol with the heater on. Its had a new water pump and thermostat, so it can only be the Matrix now ..... Is it a dash out job ? And what sort of timescale are we looking at ? Cheers Dom

you got a haynes manual for it ... that should give all the info Yeah Right Great if you want to change the oil on a brand new car absolutely fookin useless for anything more technical The one I have for a Manta/Ascona in the section about the rear diff, tells you how to take the halfshafts out and change the wheelbearings and then tells you to take it to a dealer for anything to do with the Diff Its only shims FFS, but they just couldnt find the info so they say refer to dealer You have a lot to learn about Haynes

Just to make sure its the matrix join the pipes together where it goes through the bulkhead and see if you still have the problem.
Never done one on a golf but every car manufacturer seems to put it it such a place that only 16 year old yoga practioners with bony girl arms can get to them without taking most the dash out so I am sure you are in for a fun job ;D

You don't need the dash out, can be done without. Not that bad a job really, took me a full day to do one but I'd never read up on it, just trial and error. As mentioned above, first bypass the matrix with a bit of copper pipe to make sure that it your problem, very commonly it's the safety valves put in by VW that fail rather than the matrix. If you do have to change it have a look in the FAQ's on the ClubGTI forum, sure there is a guide in there. If not, drop me a PM and I'll write you out a step by step guide to save skinning too many knuckles!

IE replace them with copper pipe so I still have flow to the heater ? What effect will that have on the heater ? will it work ? take longer to warm up ? etc ? I have got another set from a Passat, which I suppose should be the first port of call, swap them over and see if it still does it ? Cheers Dom

Yes, you can certainly bypass the valves as a temporary measure with copper pipe to test if that's the problem. A lot of people remove them altogether but they were put there by VW in a recall due to a lot of matrixes bursting under pressure and soaking the occupants feet with boiling water/coolant so I like to keep mine plumbed in. They shouldn't really have any effect on the heater but I suspect it would work better than usual with the valves removed, particularly if they are malfunctioning and restricting the flow in some way. I believe if you replace the matrix with a Mk3 Golf one then the valves aren't required so might be worth doing that if you have to swap it.

DEFINATELY NOT A DASH OUT JOB! Let me have some lunch and I'll be back with my method.....

right. If you do need to do the matrix, here's the easiest way of doing it.
Take all bottom half of the dash board out (centre console, bins, pockets etc). When the ceentre colsol comes out there's a big black box behind it, that's got the matrix in it. Take the fan motor out. Undo the 6 (iirc) screws that hold the duct work from the fan to the matrix. Disconnect the 2 pipes that go through the bulkhead (from the engine bay side). Refer to haynes (because I can 't remember) for getting the heater matrix box out. It simply drops down and comes out. Remove matrix, lob in bin. Install a MK3 golf matrix - apparently stronger and more reliable. Refit is a reversal etc etc.
Hope this helps. It's about a day's job and a pain but well worth it.

Cheers Nogrille, I have ordered a Mk3 Matrix from ECP, so pick it up on the way home tonight.
Can I do away with the valves altogether then ?
Only thing that does slightly bother me is...... Everything I have read talks about th eMatrix and fan being behind the centre console. This is a Golf Syncro with a higher tunnel, and I am sure that the Blower motor sits under the passenger side dash, behind/underneath the glovebox.....
Is that different to a normal MK2 ?
Cheers Dom

The easiet way to tell it take off the cowling under the dash in the passenger footwell, if there's a big round plastic thing (right up against the a pillar) with a relay plugged into it, then that's your fan and motor. I'll take some photos tonight as I never put the bottom half of my dash back on

I read it somewhere but bu**ered if I can find it now Something about drilling a hole in a case and som WD40 or spray grease for the bearing Cheers Dom

No worries. wd40's a no no unless you want to smell of wd40 for the rest of your life! I just greased the spindle at both ends and that cured it.

Well we did it But its one of those jobs you only ever want to do once..... well "want to do" isnt really accurate, Have to do is more like it.... Oh and especially on a Syncro, as the higher Tunnel makes a tight job even worse Took the old Matrix out, seemingly nothing wrong with it Put new one in anyway, because there was no way I ever wanted to go through that again . We Changed the Valves for the spare set of Passat ones I had at the same time, and i suspect it was those that were the problem all along Since found out that I can remove them altogether, so I`ll get some new Hose and do that at the weekend, along with putting the rest of the lower dash back together Had a visit from Mr IRSM ;D who hobbled in with Milk for tea and bicuits which was was very well recieved... ;D Started at 7pm got done around 11, with 2 of us working on it. Not a job I would like again, but for anyone else contemplating it....... dou yourself a favour and take the front seats out and steering wheel off to start with...... makes it a bit more bearable ;D And prevents the seats being hurled across the garage later on Cheers for all the advice guys Laters Dom

I did one on an Audi 90 once, that was fun Just for a laugh we rang up the main stealer after to ask them how much they'd charge to do it and they said they wouldn't touch it but if they did the bill would be 4 figures - I laughed at them ;D
