I was wondering where these stand within the law. I fancy adding one to my car (not saying wat for fear of ridicule, but a build thread will be added in time!), but i'v heard that they are MOT failures
Can anyone confirm/dispell this?

Not an MOT fail. As long as it doesn't interfere with suspension, fuel line etc....and doesn't protrude further than the widest part of the body (except wing mirrors) then it's perfectly fine as far as the MOT is concerned. I've been running a side exit for a number of years, passes the MOT fine.

Wicked, i was hoping it would be something like that. I had best get a little modest one then!
Do you know of any companies that do them especially, since i really want a nice slim silence to prevent scrapage, because she will be lowered a fair amount too.

some vehicles have them as factory fit so yeah, nothing wrong with a side exit.

I don't think there is any distinction in law anywhere regarding the difference between a component being factory fit or aftermarket. The issue will be that most aftermarket side exit exhausts will be quite loud and thats more likely to be an MOT issue than how it exits. If the MOT tester believes the exhaust is unsafe he can fail it, for example if if were designed in such a way that it would pass exhaust fumes into the passenger cabin.

Hello again mate . I used to have a side exit on the Polo for a few years and never had any problems with it MOT wise . If you look underneath the car the pipe comes out at an angle just before the rear wheel arch and this is a perfect place to cut and weld on a new silencer . I found a small cherry bomb silencer was the best to use as it was no bigger than around 3" diameter and the length was spot on too !

Yeah, i did see the pipe looked like it might be east to mod. I was thinking of having the exhaust running down the side of the car, like on a lotus 7
Do yo have any photos jules?
Good photos from the brekkie meet too, some nice autos there

Funny enough I was talking about side exit exhausts today to my dad's girlfriend. Her friends husband back in the 80's had a Triumph Stag with a pair fitted, Her friend getting out of it one day managed to badly burn her leg on the pipe and ended up in hospital and is still scared today she said!.

Funny engough I was talking about side exit exhaust today to my dad's girlfriend. Her friends husband back in the 80's had a Triumph Stag with a pair fitted, Her friend getting out of it one day managed to badly burn her leg on the pipe getting out of the car and endded up in hospital and is still scared she said!. Offt! Thats the danger i guess. I'd have to have a saety warning on the back of the sun visor! A mate of mine burnt his legon a motorbike exhaust, was proper nasty too.

The sidepipes on my RV eagle claimed two of my friends, one male and one female permanantly marked on the calf, but then thats what happens if you don't listen to the warning to "keep your leg away from the pipes when you get out"

Thats the sort i want, where would i get one of those from?
I'd probably tuck mine under the car too, for extra safety!

mine were sidepipes rather than "a side exit exhaust", side pipes come in lots of styles, the ones i had on that were just pipes running into cherry bomb style silencers and chromed to look good.
Have a google for sidepipes and pick the ones you like the look of.
Mine were tucked under the sidesteps, people still manage to press the back of their legs against them when they got out, especially short people, probably less of a problem in a normal car as you don't have to stretch your leg out and down to clear the step.

The MOT vision on them over here is that they have to end after the last opening parts (like doors/windows) so that the exhaust fumes can't enter the cabin while driving. Exept the bootlid off course..
second rule is that the exhaust should come out on the driver's side, so you don't blow your fume's into the face of cyclists and pedestrians.
so a 3 door is no problem getting through MOT with a side exhaust but a 4 door is different..

An exhaust can exit anywhere you like in the UK, even right under the car, it can also leak and still pass an MOT as long as its not to noisy and no fumes enter the cabin.
