Why is the chassis so long on that black one? Imagine reversing that onto a bay at Sainsburies Stoke!

Why is the chassis so long on that black one? Imagine reversing that onto a bay at Sainsburies Stoke! I'm assuming its so you can fit the sleeping section like on the blue one that Weble quoted. The black one will have been extended. If you look at the first photo you can see its had a roof chop. I think its a Pete 377. Its got a wide grill and a big window cab, but the Texas bumper and other custom touches makes it hard to date. The rigs with the long sleepers are usually for exihibitions. Or racecar transport, they are custom built. American trucks have evolved in recent years, to take into account stricter emissions rules and such. Thats why you tend to see more customised rigs, they are slowly becoming defunct. The common approach to refurbishing trucks in the US is to produce a glider kit. You get a bare frame with a cab, and you can then build it up how you want it. The yellow 60 Pete is a small window needle nose model, with a later bumper, probably how the Duel truck once looked. The red one with the Wilson livestock trailer, I think is a 378, quite a late model, notice the spread bogie on the trailer. I'm not too keen on the custom jobs with the turned down visors and puke bright paint, give me a nice resto or a mildly customised truck any day. And just think they used to race these things on ovals in the States Tyrone Malones Bandag Bandit is worth a look though.... If you want a modified retro truck, this is what I like....proper meaty....

Why is the chassis so long on that black one? Imagine reversing that onto a bay at Sainsburies Stoke! You cant reverse a LWB transit in there let alone that huge beast!! We sometimes have a kenworth recovery truck in our place that belongs to Mansfield recovery, they operate it in the centre of Birmingham!!
