Tada, it came just like this. She drove back home fin but a few knocks and things needed adressing. So first up was two new rear wheel bearings. One of the windows wouldnt open. The cable had snapped and was a rusted tangled mess. It was hot that weekend so picked one up from a mk2 golf to replace it. Did a few boring bits, new rocker gasket, oil change and filter, air filter, thermostat, new expansion tank it had cracked and was very leaky. . Moved onto the bodywork and had a go at sorted the lumps of gaff where the sidestrips were. some crusty door bottoms got some grinder treatment. and the dents got removed heatgunned the bumpers However it was looking a little rough by this point

adjusted the carb, which was playing silly buggars, and put a new waxstat on. And she drove like a dream. Knocked up a new rear section for the exuast so it didnt bang on the beam, and then dug out the the paint. stripped it down and attempted some of this roller painting everyone was raving about took some time to get this right......... and yes we rushed it after getting quite excited, and I only had a day days to do it before I went away on our roadtrip

as shiny as it looked in the pics, it was pretty crusty all over and even after some considerable polishing still look shat. plus I wanted to get as much grot off as I could. when it got to that stage we thought sod it, plus I was gonna use it for a little roadtrip and the vinyls we used on other cars previsously took the laquer off in places Sooo after much painting and rubbing down, one or too stencils. Some black paint on the rims a set of chrome trim rings. Some carefully mounted bracketry and wirings. It was about ready, for the scumrun. Heres us at the Milau Viaduct having a picnic somewhere in france drove like a dream, and a round trip do barcelona and back with some huge detours

it has been a great car so far, just going to keep plodding along with it really. Fitted a lovely shiny old wing aerial - every vw I have ever owned they have been snapped off. no aircon and handraulic windows prompted this addition, mounted with a plate under the dash holes so it can be removed if necessary and some other useless accessories and made a start on re-lowering it.. as we all know chopped springs kill kittens. sadly thats with no rear suspension at all. So it went back up with some mk3 golf coilovers that I blagged for peanuts. down some more.. cut down the bumpstops, but the springs appear to be made of the most unspringingly material ever and the ride is now really very firm indeed, so need to check what rate they are and try and source some less angry ones. wound it down some more and slung on some wheels with a higher profile to soften the ride. and thats pretty much how it stands at the moment. *edited as i messed up the image tags again*

Syncronised boot opening there on our cars, Cris. I love the way you have told this story! I like the that age spent head scratching about the front A bar and how to fit it wasn't in there ;D I would say looking good, but we both know that considering I've been there pretty much every step of the way Rich

yeah i think i spoke to the owner of the one you bought at beach bugging this year, if not then theres another one in southampton ..unlikely i know, he said he recently put a new screen in it? i saw this pop up on ebay and was tempted too and the mk3 coilovers on the rear were a nice idea... but the struts were too long. so when it was wound down to a suitable height it just sat on the bump stops. For the moment its back on chopped springs all round again.
