I *might* be doing some thing for a magazine in which I buy a budget banger and run it down to Cornwall on a shoe string, my idea was to buy a derv and run it on veg oil (got a mate with a fish & chip shop), the only criteria is that is has to be spacious and bloody cheap to buy, very cheap, and diesel. What ever I buy is going to be old hence me posting it on a Retro forum I was thinking: Citroen BX, a wedge shape rover, Pug 405, Sierra etc. I can't think of anything interesting though?? Any one with any bright idea's?? Cheers

Agreed and recommended. Peugeot 205 diesels are an excellent choice. ;D

Sorry this is a bit ot, but does anyone know what and where that Mk2 golf diesel that was super tuned? side exit?
I'm unsure of the Pug 205 diesel, my sister had one that had terrible head gasket problems, ended up cracking the block?
You can get the 306 quite cheap now, and that is a good car.

Datman has just got in a Bluebird diesel, the FWD T12/T72 type. But chances of finding one not cabbied to death?
I agree about the 505.

Thanks for all replies, it has to be spacious as it will be carrying 3-4 passengers with luggage for the weekend. 309 diesel might be better than the 205, I assume they share the same lump?
Bluebird would be good! Astra estate is also an option...
Feeling the Nato look!

Diesel Volvo 2/7 series are hard to come by, but if you occasionally see them in the autotrader, on ebay, etc, and even though they're rare they sell for like £150-£250 with tax and MOT if you don't mind one with a bit of mileage that isn't immaculate (believe me, a slightly tatty one with 200, 000 miles on won't let you down, the diesel ones are just as bombproof as the petrols, which have been known to reach more than a million miles without rebuilds. Plus any of the big RWD Volvos will easily carry five people and lots of luggage without the need for a roofrack, the estates especially, so your three to four people should be no bother. Incidentally, don't you still have to pay fuel duty to the government when you use old cooking oil? If that's the case, be careful the law don't catch wind of you doing it somehow, I'd imagine the fine for not paying up is about the same as it would be for filling up with red diesel,

I'd have to look it up but it's some sort of offence in any case, and you know much our current government loves their petrol station profits, so I'm sure it'd be a pretty stiff fine, plus points on your license but I might be wrong, in any case it probably isn't worth it.

I know a bloke who has a plant hire firm, he got caught with red in his Hilux, they confiscated his pick-up and the 'scoop' bit for the digger that was in the back!
Also know a tipper driver with a MAN 6x2 who ran it for 5 years and got a £3000 fine. Pot luck, but think how much he saved over that period even though he copped a big bill!

Check out renaults as well. Savannahs aren't expensive and 19s are cheap as chip fat.....
But on a test run check for cooling water being used, they can has gasket probs (moreso on the 1600 motor).

Astra or C[h]avalier 1700td will be just the job. not hideously slow and can be bought for pennies. Re. veg oil.... yes you still have to pay a fuel duty on it, but it's up to you to keep a record of how much you use Re. red / cherryade.... if you get knobbled, you're buggered. But checks for it are carried out by trading standards who will be too busy looking for hookey mini-cabs running on it to trouble the private motorist..... also, if you use cherryade once, it stains the tanks / fuel system of the vehicle pretty much for life. Just so you know like...
