Have been looking at one of these via the power of the internet, its a fair way away, its a very tidy H reg turbo with some mods, the chaps wants £2500 for it, which seems a lot but based on the condition it doesnt seem unreasonable. Nice wheels, full respray and retrim, decent stereo, stainless exhaust and a bigger turbo for over 300 bhp. My only experience of these is buying one off a trader mate and the Head Gasket blowing inside 10 miles and it going back, this has the TRD metal gasket so it shouldnt be an issue. Anyone have any thoughts ? My main problem is convincing the missus but I am bored of my 2003 Saab Aero and never really use it so may as well have a huge Japanese liability sat there instead

Metal head gaskets are no guarantee that the head gasket won't go again Proper preparation is crucial - head and block to mirror finish, and the torqing head down to 72 foot/pounds (not sure how you write it) are essential. Rear arches are a problem - get your hand up inside and have a real good poke around. Big ends can go too, even on "low" mileage cars. BTW these will do 200k easily if looked after - 100k is barely run in. I had one that had around 280bhp and was capable of 140mph. Not sure about the 300BHP but then you don't list all the mods. HTH PS - Don't know if the website still exists but my ex built a really good one called www.mk3supras.com

Yeah, have been on the Mk3 forum, 140 mph doesnt sound that fast for a 280 bhp car, think the standard one did 156 mph with 232 bhp, I would expect a 280 bhp one to do 160 plus, all academic really given the speed limit !
I don't do many miles as I cycle to work, so not bothered about mpg but I cant be arsed with dragging the engine out, just had to do that on our manky old Fiat 500 !

They are awesome, check for rust everywhere thou because the rot can ruin them.
£2500 is a lot of money, but it is a manual and a turbo which usually make between £1000-1500 anyway even in average condition. If the car is mint and you really want it then £2500 isnt crazy money. Well worth it for the car your getting ;D
Although the 1JZ-GTE powered cars are more desirable, they are import only and plenty of them are auto as well. The M7-GTE (the 3.0 single turbo engine) has got a bad press for head gasket failure, which was down to a mis-translation in the head torque settings when the service info was first supplyed to the main dealers. Providing the head gasket has been changed and the block and head check (machined if needed) by someone who know what they are doing, the M7-GTE is a very strong and tunable engine.
Standard internals can see an unstressed 350 bhp, with boost increase to 1.2 bar, bigger injectors and a different MAF (injectors and MAF from a LS400 iirc ?)

Kind of academic as after it being up since March he has someone viewing it tomorrow, bummer, oh well it kind of solves a dilema for me.
Wife doesnt like them, I want something Retro but still want performance and decent reliability, might leave it until the Fiat is sorted now.
