Picked up Evo this morning - there's a lovely 2-page writeup of the 27litre Meteor/Merlin-engined Beast.
I'd only seen a tiny, badly-scanned pic of it before but there's some nice photos of it...in BOTH guises.

Thats the one.
It's got a Centurion (and used in Conqueror Tank) METEOR engine (de-tuned Merlin engine).
Great engine in Centurion (better than L60 that was in Cheiftain ;D).

No! the beast was built in the 70's and went through a few differant looks, the first of which had a rolls royce grill and silver lady that had to be removed after rolls got the hump....Pics seem a bit thin at the momment

I'd say it'll have massive, massive torque, shame it doesn't seem to get out much these days, not in this country in any case since he moved to Spain, it'd be great to see it in the flesh!

If I remember (vaguely) the were two made (by different parties) one had six wheels, the other as shown in piccys had a 'capri' style back end originally but was re-bodied due to a fire when travelling in Germany I think. The coupe pictures appeared in a 70's book called 'Weird and Wounderful motor cars'. The reason Rolls Royce got annoyed (apart from claimed copywright) was because when the car was seen in London by rich Arabs they would contact Roll Royce demanding to buy a version of this Roller...of course Rolls were initially a bit confused! I also believe for a while both cars left UK shores. The whereabouts of the 6 wheeler I don't know.

If I remeber right it caught fire here in Sweden on the way to Germany. It had been at Mantorp Park for a show at the Summer Nats sometime late 70's, I actually raced it in a Alkohol Funny Car, beat the curse word out of it but he had problems with it running on all 12....
Those were the days.....

do you know anything about the six wheeler?

I recall an article from Motor, I think, where it described the 6-wheeler. Maybe 1978 or something? The tone of it seemed to be that this was the real-deal, whereas the John Dodd car was less about outright performance (as it used basically a tank engine).
At the time I don't think it had bodywork.

Yes, the 6 wheeler (2 axles at back, not front like Panther Six ot Tyrell 6-Wheeler) had the engine mid-mounted and WAS a MERLIN engine with supercharger still fitted. Whereas the 'BEAST' was a METEOR or Merlin without supercharger (or original supercharger) on it. MERLIN and METEOR are basically same engine (V12 Rolls Royce) but Merlin was for planes (Spitfire, Hurricane etc.) and Meteor (No supercharger) was for Tanks (Centurion and Conqueror). Also there was the 'METEORITE' Engine which was a V10 (Basically a Merlin/Meteor engine with '2 Cylinders chopped off!') This was fitted to earlier Antar Tank Transports which pulled/carried the Centurion and Conqueror Tank. Good for cominality of parts .

The Beast had a Merlin installed (sans blower) when it was rebuilt.
