Hi all, I have a new car, but no V5 for it.. I'm in no way concerned about the whole is it legal stuff (have known the car from new and only previous owner is my best mate) Basically long story short I need a V5 in my name asap so I can sell it on. He has lost his V5, whats the fastest way to get it sorted..? way I see it there are a few options.. Apply for a V5 in my name using whatever form it is..? then wait Go to local DVLA office with him and try get new one issued in my name.. will they even do it? He applys for new V5.. then waits for it, then I fill it in as normal.. then I wait for it! Guess this is the longest wait option! Cheers in advance Joe

You'll need to apply to the DVLA using the v62. It costs 25 quid and you can download it from the page below. It does take a bit longer to be processed than when you buy a car normally from what I remember. www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_4017825

I think if you are applying for a V5 as a new owner you don't need to pay. You only pay if you lost the V5 yourself and need a replacement in your name but double check this on cort16's link.

The quickest way is to get your mate to apply on a v62 it will cost £25 if he doesnt have the green new keeper slip but the dvla can order a v5 from the record if there are no changes and issue a new one within a couple of days. If you then want to sell it on you can skip adding yourself as a keeper and wait until you have a buyer to complete the v5. Hope this helps

Yeah it will cost whether new owner or old one who's lost the V5.
*WARNING*: Your mate will cop a £30 fine for not updating the records to the DVLA and telling them he sold it to you if you apply for the V5.

lol might let him cop the fine! mind you might not stay mates if i do! lmao. I'll apply with a V62.. would get him to do it but as I'm gonna be selling it (he will be out country etc. etc.) might put buyers off not having V5 in my name. Cheers all

What I don't understand is why they have to charge you for a duplicate if you are already the keeper. I know they do now, but they didn't use to.

I'm with piperfish If you don't have the green slip expect to wait 6 weeks while they contact the old owner ect before issuing a new V5 ! Be a lot quiker if he just applyed for a copy then sold it direct from his name to the new owner and tha tway no-one gets fined for not updating the records ect and no 6 week wait.
