;DBeen offered this UBER cheap 5 door mark one golf, 1982/3 car (Y), mars "red", with a leaky sunroof (glass) and a 1.6 engine and a really hard to use 4 speed manual (have to force into 1st and 2nd) Am I right in thinking this is a GL? Got the chrome bump strips and washer jet front bumpers too (painted by someone, body colour to make it look "modern" ). Looks pretty solid too, could use some rear arch surgery, and has no grille or front lights, but I'm sure I can source them.... Hmm, I sense a plan, and it's beige and brown (just like my Bus)...... ;D New jobs rock, more money, more time. Love it

5 door MK1s can be cool too - specially for 'fun' projects Are you sure that its a 1.6 - not a 1.5? Its probably a GLS with this engine & chrome trimmed bumpers. Sounds like theres quite a bit of work to be done on it - if you really want a MK1 5 door Golf there seems to be plenty around and unlike the 3 door version command less money - maybe worth shopping around abit more?

Derby Dan, any solid shell for £50 is worth it IMO it's says 1.6 on the engine, and I assume that is right. it doesn't need a LOT of work, not really. The bumpers will strip with some time and a few stanley blades, aI can always touch them up in black if needs be.

thumbs up if you get a good or cheap one, i remember the matchbox model i had in green with surf boards on the roof if thats what they were, now theres an idea - period surfboards, not in black though www.shabbir.com/matchbox/picgall/picles.html

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Do it... Get it done now.
If you get it and change your mind, i'll gladly take it as student wheels after Xmas. And if not, its more practicle as a daily than the bus. Got me convinced anyhow.

The swallowtail Mk1 Golfs are really, REALLY early ones. See the way the crease in the back panel, under the numberplate "dips" either side? That's the swallowtail bit. On mine, it's a straight line. Swallowtail: Regular Mk1: They were first-year-only cars, loads of other differences too, like the bonnet being subtly different, loads of interior trim bits, weird brackets in the engine bay and stuff. I guess that as VW hadn't built a hatchback before as such, there was a bit of a production change after a year to make things simpler/cheaper to do. There's a good website about all the differences here: www.swallowtail.info/They aren't "better" or anything, just a bit cooler if you know what you're looking for...

i agree, nothing especially erm, special about them, but i'd love one none the less. Swallowtails all came with wussie little engines, and quite a few with auto-boxes Another cool 5-door for ya:

Agreed. Splendid. Whats the crack with that grille? Is it a custom job? US spec perhaps?

Nogrille, guess what car I fell in love with at VW action, that is pretty much spot on, cept the brown isn't as dark as my 'velle, and I want to go for steel wheels. Darren W, you are a pic god sir , the beige one is sooooo nice. Drew, your mate Seb has a tidy black GTi now (mki) and got this one for spares, but he can't use most of the bits, and thinks its too good to break, so his loss is my gain, I hope. I may just clean the mars red up, got some G3 somewhere, and it's original german paint, which you just can't buy. Hmm, gonna call Seb now and finalise the deal I think. I'll keep you posted (he says in ernest)
