need to learn & master my ONE A DAY please . i have done some googling and have a fair idea on basics . the question is regarding those E markings on headlights, indicators and rear light clusters . i found its a criminal offence in the uk if you fit one of those components which don't have the E marking . 1- when was the E marking system introduced ? would it apply to the cars manufactured before that date ? 2- i have never noticed an mot tester checking those markings on my headlights etc unless he was doing it on the sly ? are they really strict on these ??

My MOT tester didn't check mine, I used to have a landrover 110 with different rear lights, they were not E marked (got them cheap off ebay). Perhaps its a construction and use thing and not covered in an MOT.. he only seemed worried that they worked well. That said he may just not of noticed as they looked like the standard lights.. kind of. I'd say if you have an option fit E marked lights.. as for when it came in I havn't got the foggiest but would assume if it wasnt in when your car was made the std. units wouldn't need it but any change of units probably would.

^^^WHS.
'E' markings are a C&U thing, rather than MOT AFAIK. MOT man will only check that lights work, show the correct colour and the headlamp aim is OK.
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Just to spilt hairs, I wonder if it would be illegal to get e marked back lights and polish off the markings. There was an article about doing this in Street Machine many years' ago. In essence sanding down imperfections and markings until the tail lights looked like a sucked boiled sweet - smooth and shiny.

I found its a criminal offence in the uk if you fit one of those components which don't have the E marking . E-markings only apply from a certain date and are, as has already been said, part of C&U legislation. Don't have a copy of the regs to hand so can't say what date it is; I would expect around early 80s. Might be worth PM-ing Aceadvice as I'm sure that Kev will know.

Jeez if you get some copper or VOSA type who cares about your lights have a E mark or not, you are walking home so the MOT would be immaterial. Seriously I would hope VOSA have something better to do.

E marking and such would only really be checked
1) at an IVA test
2) if you were selling dodgy knock off parts at autojumble or on eBay which are not E marked then trading standards can have you for it.

Unless like me you get the joy of being dragged to a roadside VOSA check by the local plod.. although that said they didn't check mine that I noticed but they are standard (at the minute ) anyway.

Not all cars require E marks nor do you have to have E marked lights for the BIVA except on the foglight or gas discharge headlamps. Full details and specifications here www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1989/Uksi_19891796_en_1.htmE marked lights were introduced with type Approval in 1977 .
