was thinking about how to upgrade the ol lighting the other day and how the new xenon mercs etcblind me at times, as i want more light on dipped beam, love the gas discharge look, nice clear distinctive white light, anyways found some HID kits for sale on the net, even found a few cheapish one on the ol bay for around 150 notes,,, has anyone here tried one of these kits? i was looking into the Bi xenon H4 kit,
if you have any views or experiance of these sorts of kits let us know what you think, as I'm tempted for more light and would be trick on the GTM and for road rallies

They will give out more light, but not as much as cars that come with them as standard, as your reflectors / lenses will not have been designed for gas discharge lights. You will also have to replace them with the standard kit come MOT time, as HID lights must have washers!

Check out the random spotlight thread I posted a Wiring diagram in there for relaying headlamp looms. You would not beleive the difference that makes to light output, as the voltage drop in most systems between battery switch and lamps can mean the lamps are only seeing 10v Relaying them is a much better solution and is easy to do. Golfs are notoriously bad for this. It then allows you to safely run higher wattage bulbs.... That will give you all the light you need ;D HTH Dom

taken from autobulbsdirect.co.uk, so theres is a possible grey area but i guess it depends on how picky your mot man is,,,still i think the hid is got to be worth it for the improved light you get

aye, my rocco has the headlamp relay fitted as above and it makes a cracking difference to other cars i've owned.... cost you about a fiver and half an hour.
as for the xenons - you only need washers if the xenons were fitted as standard. you can add them to any car and not have to fit washers as long as you can prove it didn't come from the factory with them. my mate's Calibra has had them added and has no washers, but a bunch of MoTs from different test centres.

I Totally agree with Danial Stern,in fact those "projector " headlight kits are basicly rubbish!!! I am in sympathy with you about being dazzled by these effing things, especially if one approaches you from over a Crest !. I stopped a dude in a new Landrover one night who was following me and asked him(not too politely either!! ) why he was following me with the head lights on FULL,He showed me that in fact he was on dip.but the height of the urban SUV meant the lights were level with my Mercs rear veiw mirror.and I couldn't see the road properly in front because of the shadow of my own car being cast. There is another website ( I lost it somewhere ) where a UNI in the US has done a study over the last 3 years on these lights and has found that they are in fact dazzling and dangerous to other road users because of bad design.BUt it's like the emporers New clothes,is'nt it?. No one is going to admit that they a effing nuisance to other road users because it was considered such a good idea at the time. Also ,have you noticed on rough roads the movement of the car is accentuated by the headlights, and it looks though the car driver is deliberately flashing his lights to upset you, which it does!!

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

part of the problem is the difference between HID light and Halogen light - when halogens were introduced many people complained they were too bright, as you'd only see a few of them and in comparison they're like full beam. but as all cars now have them, they just look like normal lights.
i agree hid's can be annoying when they're too high or moving around too much but they're not as bad as people with foglights on 24/7.
