Yeah i'd like to know what happened to it too Heres a great tech site about the Sierra (aimed at the XR4ti but applies to most) www.merkurtech.com/merkurtech/techarticles/main.phpVery in-depth articles, and has useful stuff like building your own EEC-IV code scanner, building a hybrid engine using 2.3 sierra block and Volvo cylinder head and loads of other stuff. The guy also designed and built his own sierra suspension! All beautifully engineered ;D Well worth checking out

If i can throw my tuppence worth into this thread, ive owned 3 Sierras, all series 1s and all "A" reg. 2 were 1.6 GLs and one ( the newest one i bought, when it was 5 years old) was a 2.0ltr Ghia. Probably, for its time, one of the best cars produced yet, i knew somebody at the time at Fords who was "in the know" who told me that the car nearly finished FoMoCo simply because the buying public, used to buying boxy Cortinas felt that the Sierra was too radical!! It took all the might of Fords marketing dept and heavily discounted sales to fleet operators/hire companies to get Joe Public used to seeing them out and about. The Billy Basic model was never popular then so finding one now would be a real catch. I think it was only the early Ghias didnt have slatted grills and the very early Ghias had what was called at the time "Chatsworth trim" with wooden inserts on the doors. My Ghia was post Chatsworth trim but it was luxurious, very comfortable, looked great with the pepperpot rims ( till some bastards nicked em and left it on bricks) and it would comfortably see 120mph 5 up. I think that over the years just about everything that could be done to a Sierra has been and it would take some serious thought to do something that different without making it look Chavy. With what i have seen on this site i reckon there is enough intelligence, good taste and style to create something different from what has been done over and over to them to the point of death. Over to you chaps.........

Some good points there, I remember my old chap taking a dislike to the Sierra, before owning two and loving them both - a white 1985 2.0GL, then a burgundy 1989 2.0LX. Had no effect on me whatsoever... He certainly doesn't like his Mondeo as much as the Sierras (my Mum made him get it!) With what i have seen on this site i reckon there is enough intelligence, good taste and style to create something different from what has been done over and over to them to the point of death. Over to you chaps......... Fear not, there are at least two Sierras in the Retro-Rides pipeline...

What does "V6 boat anchor" mean? (first post) if it means v6s are heavy then please, do not be put off buying a 2.9 4x4 because of the weight. Yes they are heavy. No this will not matter. As long as you`ve got something else that can achieve double figure MPG. And you can get an estate version in close to povvo spec (outwardly) if thats what you want.

What does "V6 boat anchor" mean? I always call the V6 a boat anchor myself, quite a few of us XR4 owners do.

What does "V6 boat anchor" mean? I always call the V6 a boat anchor myself, quite a few of us XR4 owners do. I assumed that it came from the comparitive merits of using the V6 as a 'performance engine'.... If compare physical dimensions, weights and power outputs to say a Rover V8, you can see why it could be classed a 'boat anchor'.... Although there are so many tuning goodies out there for it that it does make sense as a fast engine. And if you have a ford and the thought of a rover (buick) engine churns your stomach, and you can't stretch to a SBF, then it makes sense. Incidentally, a few months I looked at a V6-powered land-rover running range-rover diffs etc and with super-high ratio on-road gears. The chap reckoned it was good for 110++ (he got scared beyond that)... No seat belts, exposed metal everywhere, wobbly handling, pathetic drum brakes and a set-up like that - balls of steel required! If it hadn't have been as rotten as a pear it would have been a kool addition to the fleet.
