My Dad had 2 Sierra's as company cars, they were mk2's though. I thought they were the bo11ox, despite one being a 1.6 povo spec version. Unfortunately they looked nothing like this:

1976 Ford Escort 2dr 1100
1977 Ford Escort 2dr 1300
1978 Ford Escort 2dr 1300-2000

a black sierra with a V8 badge keeps rumbling past me in town, looks pretty subtle apart from the grille and badge and sounds very nice! Mate used to have a GLS(?) with the 2ltr pinto in it. Missed out when he sold it (usual story, extremely cheap car but not enough money to buy it). Was very impressed with it and I haven't stopped kicking myself yet for letting it pass me by.

I'm sure that black one was at the pod a few weeks back, got a mustang badge in the grille?

I remember in very early Sierra MkI days how some base models not only had the slatted grille, but it was painted black for extra poverty appeal. Think same models did without wheel trims too. Yup, just dug out an old brochure - difficult to find a shot of the whole car on one page, but how about this..... Wow, now that's basic looking. Bet that none exist like that any more, the temptation to add wheeltrims or paint the grille would have been too strong, or they'd have been thrashed to death by the lowly rep disgruntled at being given such a car. I remember an estate this spec in my home village. Until 2-3 years ago I regularly used to see a tidy A-plate 5-door in a beige colour. According to this here brochure in front of me, slatted grilles were fitted on everything up to and including GL models, though about '85 I recall the flush grille working its way down the range just before the facelift. Also, you could get the 1.3 Pinto in a Sierra!

My dad had a 2.0 GL in a dusky blue colour. One evening some friends came round with a spare set of huuuuuuuuuge tyres (must have been at least 345 on slot mags and swapped his wheels over. I think they were from a rover drag car but maybe the pcd would have been wrong - long time ago) The rims stuck waaaaaaay out of the arches. How we laughed. Fair play, when he came out an spotted what we had done (us hiding in the garage laughing) he didn't even blink just got in reversed out the the drive and layed down two excellent black lines and tons of smoke before howling off down the road! Ah suburbia!
Then he came back and made us swap them back over

I reckon those povo sierra's are ACE! Had one briefly... but unfortunately some f*cktard tried to nick it before i could get it roadworthy. They hotwired it without noticing it was left in gear and smashed it into the garage doors. Well done. When they were new I really wanted my dad to get one.... sadly even though he liked them too, he randomly went out and purchased a POVO spec montego (hearing aid beige, 4-speed g/box) instead. Fool.

Lots of potential in the Mk1's, plus lots of engine options.
I used to have a red Mk1 XR4x4 with a turbo conversion and it was sleeper-tastic with a set of boring wheels on.

Also, you could get the 1.3 Pinto in a Sierra! THAT is a great picture! I would fugging love that! Martin Buckley wrote a bit on povo-spec cars a while ago, citing the sierra 1.3 'base' (not even worthy of a name of its own!) and the cloth-seated single-cam Jag XJ40 2.9 as the epitome of the breed. I was writhing around on the floor in pleasure as I read it. Hurrah for povo chariots! any pics of the Monty NickB??

Am I right in remebering that the real povo 1.3 "base" had a plain black/gey plastic nose too. Just great! That's the one to collect.

spooky crazy timing, i was on my way home today and passed a mint slot-nose mk1 sierra, thought how long it is since i've seen one. then loads pop up on here my grandad was looking for a new car when the sierra was released, but he thought it was far too ugly so took the opportunity to get a cheap last-batch gold Cortina '80

I have a bit of a thing for Sierras so always on the look out, still see a few Mk1's about.. You are right about the Granada, never see many Mk1 estates?
