i got this phone from a boot fair a couple months ago, in a total wreck state, looked like it had been sat in a shed for years. covered in dirt and things were sticking and the like.
it didnt occur to me to take a photo in its original state unfortunately, but here it is after given a bit of a clean down and pulled apart. the bell box was painted white so needed striping.
this is the insides, rather interesting as everything is hardwired and bits move about, all quite mechanical. the modern wire is just in there as a mock up to try figure out how to rewire it for current phone lines.
it was originally hardwired into the phone line and ran in a different way. luckily theres circuit diagrams on the inside so it was easier to figure out.
this shows the inside of the dial, the brass part spins around and gives the dial abit of weight (from what i can tell) and the notched part does a morse code type thing and counts the pules for the dialing.
this is the inside of the bell box which goes from here to the phone line, plenty of fiddling went on here, adding resistors and the like.
after got the wiring all sorted i replaced it all with more in keeping wire and found some cotton braid wire then platted it up to replace the old wire to the handset which had numerous breaks. gave it plenty of polishing (and linseed oil thanks to this site) and its all come up pretty well!
just need a draw cover bit and its complete. pretty much fully restored. vaguely modded to make it usable but kept looking original ftw
