I've mentioned this before...but i had one like this top of range, comfy motorway cruser but the 2.0 drinking habbit scared me and didnt throw much excitement in, in std form that is. v reliable though. So bought the xr2 then nobody would buy the volvo so it rotted outside my student digs , didnt seem worth fixxin when suspenion was rotted, i had hoped to reserect it as a parts chaser. Its was my mades dads trusty old steed...shame on me The 3 door drifter still gets my blessings though, quite tempting

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Ive had quite a few 340's 343's and 360's. They are all Renault engines coming from 5's 9's 11's 440's 480's Dacia Dusters, but more importantly The Fuego Turbo (if you can still find one) and Piazza turbo i believe. My 2.0 injection 5 speed used to do 120mph no problems. The only thing you have to remember is it has rear leafspring suspension, so handling isnt its strong point. As for a previous post about the Daf gearbox being pants, what rubbish. It is the most efficient auto gearbox ever designed. It uses 2 taperd cones with a belt sitting in the middle. As the car moves faster a centrifugal weight pulls them apart allowing the band to sit lower in the taper, hence changing the ratio. It is massivly efficient and quicker than the manual gearbox as there is less drag. The only real problem is when you have it in the wet as once it starts wheelspinning its very hard to stop. I think Volvo were decades ahead of everyone else and made a real 1980's drift car

It seems to me there are two ways of going about modding a 3 series, depending on what your personal preference is. Boycie was talking about putting bigger Renault engines in the 340 model, which is always good if Renaults are your thing, whearas I'm more of a fan of the Volvo four cylinder engine myself. It's based on the classic Volvo inline four that goes as far back as the Amazon, and was used as late as the 940 in the mid 90s, so they had time to perfect it. Now seeing as it's basically the same bottom end in a 360 that's in a 940 turbo or 2.3, just with head changes etc, it really isn't that hard to transplant the 940 engine in there, giving a good useable car with more power and torque than the standard 360, without the need for any major surgery, the engine will go in there pretty easily, the car was designed around it after all. Of course, you could then get down to modding said 9 series engine to give you more power, they're said to be able to manage 300bhp with no drop in reliability, the only thing is I don't know if the 3 series transmission would cope with that, although it was made by Volvo in the era where they hugely overengineered practically everything so it probably will cope easily. And yes the Daf Variomatic transmission is just as fast in reverse as in drive, it's a cool little gearbox, as Boycie says very efficient, it gets the power and torue to the wheels very smoothly and it's a joy to use, although I've only used on briefly, I knew a pair of brothers who had a Variomatic Daf years ago, I got a shot of it once although this was before I had a license so I wasn't able to drive it far, but it's a great little transmission.

tried a classic policy? just ring 'em and ask if the ovlov is considered a classic model, if they'll do it you'll be talking hundreds rather than thousands.

Confused.com is w*nk mate, the cheapest quote they gave me for the Onion was £3000!!!!!!!!!!!! Spoken to other people who have had the same kind of stupid replys. Just try the Tescos website, only takes a second. I know they allow 17 year olds as i nearly took insurance with them and they do 'retro' cars just dontdo pre 1980 or something like that. So they should allow you?

anyone got any sujestions on how i can get cheaper volvo insurance, Surprising! The reason I chose my 360glt as my second car was that after lots of research it turned out to be the lowest insurance group for the performance of any car I could afford (group 10) Think it was hotwire who started a cool thread on modding these a while back, can't find it now Mine looked exactly like this one: and this is just plain yummy!

Today has been perfect for drifting Volvos. I've had my estate sideways on a few wet roundabouts whilst out on a mission for work today!
That dual 40's set up looks lovely. I can almost hear it drinking fuel and air........bwoooorp. Ooh, I'm all excited!
