We've got a ford Orion looking very sorry for itself on a G plate diesel, my dad used to run it but it hasn't been on the road for a fair while sitting in one of our fields.
I was having a mooch about and had a look underneath it, boot, bonnet and under the carpet and jolly pain in the backside me it's in good condition... but the paintwork has badly oxidised.... which isn't too much of a problem with a bit of wet and dry plus a t-cut.
I wouldn't have looked at it twice a few years ago, but it's growing on me now because there can't be many left on the road and i'm starting to appreciate retro cars more than I did in my yoof.
So i've got the choice of restoring this or a E30 325i...
I'm no ford buff so i've got a few questions to get it where I want it, since I want something at least comparable to the 325i speed wise.
1. Engine/gearbox-wise what are the easiest options for around 150bhp, I would prefer to stay away from turbo since I don't want the hassle of locating an intercooler. Series 2 rst gearbox and 2.0 silvertop zetec? 2. I think it's got drums and pee poor discs on the front, i've read that 2wd cosworth discs on the front and 4wd calipers is as good as i'm going to get for bang per buck... but what can I do about the rear? 3. What's the best option for suspension on this car, I don't want to spend more than 500 but I would like front and rear strut braces. Spax/OMP? 4. The 5 door interior is pretty naff (but in very good condition), is there a better trim level I can put in there? 5. Where is the best place to get parts from in the U.K OEM/performance for this model? 6. Anyone know of any good build/restoration threads/sites?
Cheers lads

If you only want 150bhp you might aswell plonk a 2 litre Zetec in there, they're 130bhp standard but with a decent intake and exhaust should make 150 easy.

Sounds like a lot of bother if your target is to have something as fast as a BMW 325. Just get a 325!
I think you should T-cut the orion and get it on the road as is with the old diesel donk.

Yep. I love orions, have owned a few in the past and I keep an eye out for one that pleases me for small money, but if I were worried about speed or driving thrills, I would concentrate on the beemer. Sure, you can get 150 bhp in one fairly easilly, but it means an engine swap, brake upgrades, suspension upgrades and other faff, while the beemer comes with all this as standard. Plus, the beemer is RWD, which is much more entertaining on the road and a hell of a lot more fun should you venture onto a track. If it were me, I would turn the beemer into a track-monster/b-road weapon and tart up e orion a little with wheels n stuff for daily use.

1. Zetec 2.0 (still needs a bit of work to see 150bhp thou) or I4 mk5 RS2000 engine 150bhp out the box (has been done before but isnt as straight forward as a Zetec conversion) 2. Either 2 or 4wd cossie brakes will go up front and give very good stopping power (4wd is much cheaper as they uses sliding calipers), but 285mm discs mean 15" wheels minimum. Leave the rear drums or upgrade to RSturbo drums they are slightly bigger, but why bother? 3. Koni or Gaz. Various companies do strut braces. Flowflex do a very cheap range of poly bushes too! 4. RS turbo Recaros will bolt straight in, the rear bench might fit or require a bit of adjustment. 5. Burton Power - for new bit (great company very knowledgable staff). Speed Shack - www.speedshack.co.uk/ - for used bits 6. Passion Ford forum - Boring but plenty of knowledge. Hope this helps ;D

I consider my old Astra F as a modern, though (1993 K) and my Escort as Retro.. funny how we categorise things like that o.O edit: Oh and just to add - the title of this thread is the first time I've ever seen or heard that sentence in my life!

When I remember specific WRC and BTCC years/cars from the early-mid 90's it makes the gap between now and then even more pronounced. Scary stuff.

RS turbo/XR4x4 brakes would be the best OE setup to go for, uses 260mm discs and bigger calipers (as opposed to 240mm discs and smaller calipers lesser models use). With RS turbo rear drums.
The next step up from there is 285mm cosworth brakes, but your looking at 15" rims minimum.

The 2wd Cosworth brakes are 4 pots mate, 4wd has the sliding singles, also to be picky, they are 283mm not 285! ;D
