Hi, I have a wee pedal-powered project in mind, for which I will need a freewheel hub. A bike is the obvious source, but is there such a thing that allows you to pedal backwards too? ie pedal forwards as normal, when you stop pedaling, it freewheels as normal, but if you pedal backwards it locks and turns backward, allowing reversing?

A coaster brake hub will allow that, they require an arm coming off the hub to be attached to the frame to work.

was just gonna say that... only problem being is sorting the required spokes

A coaster hub would allow you to glide backwards with out the chain moving.
But Dave wants to pedal to go backwards.
Ages ago I heard of a fixed free cog. That had a mechanism and a lever. You turned the lever to change between freewheel and fixed. I don't know if you could actually pedal to go backwards. As presumably it was fitted onto a normal threaded hub, with no lock ring to hold the cog. So it may unscrew under hard use

no, a coaster brake will do it. believe me. and he will be able to pedal both directions. you just need to take the arm off that secures it to the frame. that way when pedalling forwards you are using the ratchet mech, then stop pedaling uses the freehwheel, then pedal back engages what would be the brake (if the arm was still on) but as it wouldnt be the wheel would go backwards (using the brake as your ratchet effectively) simple.... Coaster brakes allow pedalling backwards as far as I can remember, you pedal backwards to brake and if you keep pedalling once you come to a stop the wheel will turn backwards, is this not correct?
The ability to glide backwards without the chain moving, as you say, would require a freecoaster hub as frequently used on BMXs, maybe this is the cause of confusion.

Yes a coaster brake will allow that as far as i remember....... but i think its very very slow (as in loads of friction with the arm connected)

Thanks folks, I will look into it. I'm laid up just now, so am just planning this out in my head and have plenty time to research the details before I can start building it.
