Okay folks,.. I've kind of got a hankering for one of these : But I suspect we only got the yoof friendly hatchback : And the family friendly 4 door ,.... ? So what did we get? Did we get the 4WD estate?

As I understand it: We got the AE 82 which was the FWD Hatch in the photo, that was around the same time as the AE86 RWD We didnt get the Trewin or Levin ? 2dr saloon RWD but they did in the states. We got the 4wd estate corolla (That shape) in limited numbers and the 4wd estate "Tercel" (Boxy shape) in reasonable numbers but most were used as farm vehicles or country vehicles so have well rotted by now Thats my understanding of it, but there are others with far more J-tin knowledge than me so I stand to be corrected ;D ;D

Ooh AE92's ;D Yes, err well, err umm, where do I start... The AE92 Coupe (white one) a member who I go to shows with in the TEC has a black one. There have been a few personnal imports. With regards to AE92 performance variants we only had the 3dr GTi 16v (4AGE engined). However for other parts of the world there was the coupe (that you want) in Levin and Trueno versions plus some were supercharged. They also did a supercharged 3dr hatch GTi in Japan (but not actually called 'GTi'). For some far eastern countries the 'GTi range' was offered in the 'liftback' 4/5 door shell. Australia had a 5 door Hatch GTi (not liftback but a 5 door of our 3dr hatch body shell ...bit cramped looking the rear doors on that model ) Finally the 4WD Estate sold at the same time (which did not prove that popular in Great Britain although useful and reliable and very cheep secondhand) was actually a AE 95; a model code number used only for the 4x4 Estate. I've probably missed some out and if it all sounds confusing as to what models they made for 'here and there... ...it is!

AE82 Was the earlier 'GT' Hatch of 1983 to 1987. AE92 (Like in photo...and what mine is) Was the 'GTi' Hatch of 1987 to 1992. Both 4AGE Powered

Only AE86 (as you state) is rwd
All AE92's versions are Front wheel Drive (despite the AE92 coupe looking like it should be Rwd...it's not).

Is this the corolla you are talking about? This was my mates car, hes sold it now, but it use to have sooooo much grip it was crazy. Apparently the drive train is bullet proof and good for 400bhp, the clutch certainly was! J

Thats right. The 'AE95 (Toyota model code)' Estate of 1987 to 1992 is mechanically bullet proof, but what few were sold (and I emphasize FEW!) ended up in Farms and thus rotted to oblivion, although Mechanically and Electrically they would be fine. The were brought out as a sort of 4X4 replacement for the 4X4 Tercel Estate that was sold here. But these Toyota 4X4 Estates never sold well due to the likes of other manufacturers (Such as Subaru) who offered at the time the same sort of class of vehicle. This is why since 1992 the has been no Corolla 4X4 (Officially) to my knowledge .....and it is a shame. One good thing though: Even if you do find a nice 4X4 Corolla Estate it will still be cheep , they are hard to sell as people don't know much about 'em or fact they even existed!

PIMP diggin them orange centred chromes ;D ;D ;D Those be SSR Mark III rims.... yummm. The 4AGE AE92's came with a 3 different engines as well... big and small port (100 and 88kw respectively) "redtop" motors, and the Trueno/Levin varient's also featured the 4AGZE which had the SC14 supercharger attached to it. Bloody great fun to drive, loads of low end torque! GT's came in both hatch and sedan form (J market anyway) and there was also a "Cielo" liftback version which had a 4AGE variant in it's GT form. This is the liftback (albeit in bargain basement form)... cool looking, and a great base to start with I reckon! Other than the 4AGE, they had 4A-F's, 4A-FE's, (narrow head twincam 1600), 5A-F's, 5-AFE, 5A-FHE (1500's), and the gutless 2E (1300). Oh and 1C dieselmotors.... J models we're know as the Corolla FX (hatch) Cielo (liftback) and the sedans were simply badged Corolla - all came in various guises as you'd expect. Then you had, FX-V, FX-Zi, FX-GT etc etc..... We had them all in GL, GLXi designations and stuff, our top spec hatch was the GTi-16, I suspect similar to what you guys received.
