Right then, got a query for you all, just wondered if there were any latent LPG fans out there with some specialist knowledge... I'm looking at an M6 engined E28 BMW, the car was essentially a 528i to start with, circa 1986. I want to fit LPG so I can lord it around the country in a smug 300bhp kind of way. Trouble is a simple vapouriser system will have to be so large inside the inlet tract that it'll probably have too much of a detrimental effect when running on petrol. Maybe a 34mm vapouriser is needed... So, the better solution would be six injectors on the throttle body housings/manifold wherever. But because it's such basic management it would need some sort of stand alone kit. All new kits don't seem to have such a thing, taking there feed from the existing ECU. I run a Volvo 240 daily with LPG, it's single point injection and basic, but it works. What I don't want to do is cock the M6 motor up with problematic running due to the high octane rating causing a misfire and then start having to chase problems left, right and centre... Anyway, I'm no expert, so if anybody is... I've talked to a few installers who don't want to touch it... Gis a shout eh? Cheeeears. ;D

I'm in the process of collecting parts for Merc 6.3 to build a LPG set up.dedicated with NO petrol. My Plan involves using a Megasquirt ECU ( version3 with EDIS ) .I am going to use Kiehin injectors and with such a large engine i will have to use two vaporisers. You can buy injection setups for LPG but the cost of those is out of proportion with the components involved. With your M6 you already have the basics ,you needn't fit a different igniton because the BMW set up is pretty good ( I ran a M6 years ago and was most impressed especially after I bored and stroked it out to 4 liters) . On the mega squirt site there's lots of info on this and you needn't build a kit because there is always some one selling fully assembled kits on the 'bay. Also, given the lack of free space under the bonnet going the injection route is the best way to go. The high octane won't cause misfiring, crappy plugs do that and with approx. 114 octane you will have the correct HP !!!

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Many thankyous sir, it's good to see somebody else taking advantage of LPG in the right way, I'll check out the info. People who fit it to piddling little cars need seeing too, surely cheap fuel means you can buy a bigger motor! ;D As for the tax situation, it's hard to pin down exactly what is going to happen. It went up roughly 3p in September which was a rise in some tax or other per kilo or summat. A mate who works for a fuel company reckons there's been a deal struck between the large operators and the government to cap the price, on the basis that it's costing them tens of thousands of pounds to install new pumps on forecourts. They therefore don't want a wasted investment if the price goes up. Even if it does rise to 60p a litre, roughly a 35% increase in the UK, I'll still buy it because it's still cheaper than unleaded. And there's no way they'll be able to get away with a bigger increase over a short amount of time. Once you've put fifty litres of fuel in for a little over £20, you can never go back... But you must feed

I'd love to LPG a car, but the problem is the install cost outweighs the benefit I'd get back

Do like I did and buy one with it already fitted, my daily 240 saloon cost £250 with a blown head gasket and kit fitted. £300 saw it sorted with a fresh cam belt full service etc... The head gasket was down to a back fire because the old owner didn't know how to drive it with LPG.
It's a fairly old system that I don't use in traffic, as vayring pressure at idle can cause a backfire, but anything over first gear is safe as houses. For £600 all in it's great, I've done over 18k in six months without a sniff of a problem. Obviously with that sort of mileage it pays for itself, but you can get a non-injector, vapouriser system installed for a grand like the one on the Volvo... At current prices I'm getting the equivalent of 60+ to the gallon. Legend.
Sorry, I get very excited about LPG and try to convert anybody who'll listen ;D

I fitted an LPG kit on my 130 saloon. Unfortunately, the kit was of utterly sh*te quality. The petrol solenoid had a flaw in the casting that p1ssed petrol out everywhere. Obviously never had a pressure test of any sort. The gauge on the tank never worked, nor did the led indicator on the switch. The changeover switch itself never worked reliably either and in the end I chucked away all the electric bits, fitted a tap in the petrol line and ran it on gas as the 'default' condition. It was fugging great when it worked properly. As i fitted it myeslf though i think it would fail an MOT on that now cos I understand you have to present a certificate of installation at MOT time if a kit is fitted.
