Ever since I bought the Scirocco, I've been eBay'ing everyday for a possible VW engine conversion. The thing is, if I get either a 16V or a late 8V engine they're going to be fuel injected.... (Darren - does your Golf run the injection?) .....so, the question is how easy will it be to convert to carbs / throttle bodies? - (I don't want to go the whole hog with megasquirt etc) Let's be sensible about the budget as well - no (further!) suggestions about Audi TT Quattro or 1.8T engines.....!

I know someone with a Mk2 1600gti scirroco that is for sale... 15" BBS RA`s single wiper, small square twin lamps etc BBS body kit as well ;o)
That is an Injected motor.....
Then you would have pump, lines, tank, ecu etc..... you could sell the bits and just end up with enough to go injected with whatever choice of motor ?
16v on standard injection is not bad its finding the rocco injection bits thats difficult

That's why I'd like to ditch the injection...... Changing my 1600 carb engine to the 1600GTi engine won't give me much noticible difference I'd ideally like to upgrade to the 2.0ltr 8V (ADY) or 2.0ltr 16V (PG ?)

I was saying with the injection bits, you could run the ADY or PG motor on their standard injection set ups, and sell off the rest of the Rocco Bits FWIW I wouldnt bother with carbs on them, too much hassle its just as simple to go throttlebodies now.

(how much do they want for the Rocco?)

can i stick a spanner in the works....
the PG engine is a G60 engine (1800 8v, Supercharged)
the 2.0 16v from mk3 golfs and the like is an ABF - and they take to carbs quite well

I didn't think I got the code right for that - thanks The other option could be to fit the AZD (1.6 16V 97> Golf, Lupo Skoda etc) engine, and fit throttlle bodies......? The 2.0ltr 8V from MK2 Golf was PB?

Correct.
The AZD is an interesting one, suppose it should be cheap and easy to source, but they're a bit gutless and not overly tuneable
What is it your after, just a newer more reliable engine, or grunt ?

A bit of both to be honest.....
The 1600 in the Scirocco at the moment is fine once at speed and very economical (about 37 mpg combined), but just lacks power when pulling away / overtaking......
the enigne's only done 87k as well......

I'd be inclined to put a 16v engine in it, either 1.8 KR or 9A/6A/ABF 2 litre. All of which can be run on carbs if required but I doubt you'd get anything like the economy of an injected setup and might be a pig to keep in tune.

How easy is it to put the ECU system in then - wiring etc? It's quite straightforward. There's a FAQ about it somewhere (Matey-matey.com I think). I'll dig it out.
