This might turn into a bit of a controversial thread but I thought I'd ask anyway. Quite a few of you are running non standard wheels, lowered, basic paintjobs and stickers but the car is otherwise stock. I see a number of people chop and change their car around quite regularly, but it's not major work, just the way it looks. Do you declare these changes to your insurance companies?
Mine is as it rolled out the garage, all mods declared. I'm with Flux who charge £25 every time you change something. See who the real criminals are, eh?

I declare all my mods. However, when I phoned my insurance to tell them I was raising my car, they told me they had no note that it was lowered to begin with - despite me having the original paperwork from them which states it is lowered. With my new engine it gives me a price hike of another £200

Can't recommend them highly enough, I've been with them for years now.

every last thing, Even down to the gearknob and dustcaps. At least they cant say I'm holding anything back ;D
Have to admit tho. I am waiting 2 weeks to renual to tell them about the new steering wheel rather than get hit with a £25 charge. If it was a major job like engine swap or suspension i'd tell them straight away.

I'm with flux and they have never charged me the £25 fee. not once!
I declare every mod -On my old 106 I was quite impressed as I had to go onto extra paper to fill out the modified vehicle declaration.
I pay £300 fully comp, although the lupo is just "lowered suspension, Alloy wheels" so not really crazy mods.

All the midget mods, and there's a few big ones are declared and I don't think it made a difference to the premium as I was expecting to pay about £100 and it came in at £113.

yeah, mods have never realy made any difference to the cost so why not declare them?
Even my first car at 17 they didnt care what i did to it as long s they knew about it.

And yes, I declare everything, I can even update the MID online ;D Nothing makes any difference to cost either.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Well, I bought the car with wheels, seats and steering wheel already done, so I declared those when taking out the policy. Haven't declared anything subsequently, which was a slightly different steering wheel (same brand) and swap from 1500cc to 1600cc twin port motor. I don't think they would really care anyway. If I told the insurance company about the engine swap then I'd probably have to tell the motor registry as well

I always wanted to ask this question but never have yet. it will be a great thread if all those sorted with decs can give us tips and friendly competitive insurers. I gave my old insurer a double whammy on my sapph, admitted my new wheels, and my move to Manchester. They called me back while I was on my way to Scotland, to tell me it was going to sting me £200! Lost confidence there with decs. That was mostly for the location mind. The van I got sorted with flux mostly so I could use it personal, and teach GF to drive. They allowed the alloys on for no extra, as I was taking policy out. Insuring a van is limiting enough, using personal, and adding modes makes it dificult/expensive, especially in a city. Also for a daily your searching around everywhere possible online and of course those are designed for standard cars, so very tricky. As a result my current daily is painfully standard!!! I found Roadsure LTD (now taken over) to be good at insuring second vehicles, which they suggested I need to do with my modified V8 Sierra. It cannot be a daily driver policy they say and it needs a Thatcham immob/alarm, plus be in a club! phew! Share thou wisdom

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I've never modified a car as such, so havnt really got much to say
however, i've unmodified a car - my civic went back to the standard wheels as it drove really badly on 17's. Weirdly when i first insured it though, the non-standard wheels were already on the cover without me declaring them?!

My 3-door Sierra is on a classic car policy with Zurich, and alloy wheels made no difference to the premium. Got a quote for my Sapphire with them and it looks like lowered uprated suspension, alloys and performance exhaust / manifold add £3 a year to the premium. Not worth the risk of keeping quiet about the mods!

There's another Beetle which runs in khanacrosses and lives near my house, it's been running on the street with no bumpers or front numberplate for 15 years. But every time the lad across the street bolts 18" alloys onto his Commodore, he gets pulled over once a week for it. P-plater (young driver) Commodores are police magnets. He's been defected in it about 5 times!

He's been defected in it about 5 times! I misread that as 'he's defecated in it about 5 times'.
