Bought the welder Clarke 160TN a few weeks ago. Set it up this week. Tonight I practiced on some ol car bonnet steel..... I was playing about a bit tonight, welding on top of welds, looking at how much of a clear run I could create etc... decided to take pics of the plate as I layed with it. Pics for now. Then decided to do a "S" so that I could practice curves.

Not bad
Practise makes perfect and all.
P.s. my welding is far from good, my scooter welding was done with an ark welder and looks like some metal crapping animal has had a curry the night before and let rip! Still, if you get good penetration, it doesn't matter what it looks like, melted metal is melted metal!

Looking good Grizz. I was trying to explain to a mate who has a Bay Window with loads of holes in it that it's just a case of getting on with it. I did a one day course which gave me the boost to get a welder, but it took a lot to actually get in there and weld something! Finally got up the courage and it was so much better than I thought it would be. Crack on mate, like Lewis says, melted metal is melted metal ;D

Here's a question..... At what point does the Mig welder bite back, ie shock you. If I held 2 pieces of work and tried to weld them together on the table, which is earthed, that shoulf be fine as long as the metal touches the table sufficiently.... RIGHT ?? I am shitt scared of ending up like a bit of bacon......

it will only shock you if you are touching the feed wire and earth at the same time while welding or maybe the shroud if it is clogged up not a bad effort I enjoy welding where the access is good your stiching looks quite tidy and for the blow holes pull the gun back a bit and fire wire at it from around 2-3 cm away and sort of scribble like colouring in with a pen and you should be able to fill them quite tidily

Nice first attempt fella....... one word of advice - practice A LOT before you attack your pride n joy. I'm now going around re-doing a lot of the shoddy attempts (not all by me) made earlier. Good luck mate - massive cost cutter and pride booster in the long run too (I did that etc...) - of course we have OB to fall back on

I really have to say Seth, the tools make the man here..... I have a Scorpion auto dim helmet, and the welder is good.
If welding with Pub CO2 is hard work, then I do not want to see how easy CO2 Argon mix makes the job.
I think one of the tricks is that I do have a Gentle Touch (Ask the girls) so I respond to the welder and the steel.
CLEAN STEEL !!! That is Oldbus's contribution to the task.
Next up I want to practice some upside down, and curved jobs.
I did some 5mm steel, and that is just curse word easy, the 1.2mm automotive plate is where one needs to concentrate.
On that piece of plate the initial welds before the ones I photographed were also cut through, and butt welded, then I welded over those welds and also tried to see how far I could just run a continueous bead..... and got 20mm to 50mm lengths.... so pretty chuffed.
I think the important thing with plate is to spot weld, and to tack many points to prevent distortion and then close in bit by bit, spreading the heat.
I have a 150Amp arc welder too, and welded sone 20mm flat bar burglar proofing on Tuesday evening, and actually forgot about the distortion, ending up with one 6foot length twisting and malalligning by about 10mm over the length, quickly remedied with a bit of force.
Practice will make perfect in the long run though, and when in doubt, grind it back.

To quote OB - bodywork isn't meant to be continuously welded mate, spot - move, spot - move and it's sorted Upside down first time I got some cracking arm burns

I am shitt scared of ending up like a bit of bacon...... I was once helping a friend to build a trailer in his back garden. This consisted of a caravan axle welded directly to an angle iron frame....so a quality product then I was using my weight to hold the axle in place with the trailer upside down, while he tacked it into place. I was sitting there minding my own, when he suddenly stood up and stuck the still glowing mig wire right into my elbow....not only that but as he did so he flinched and pulled the trigger kin ell it hurt like hell, and I was left with a very painful arm and a hole that bled for ages...... Nothing like weld spatter finding its way into your underpants either, sizzled pubes anyone
