serious question.
I do need a plasma cutter, I have decided this much but you can purchase them either as a simple cutter or with a built in TIG welder.
Obviously the one with the TIG is dearer.
But cheaper than buying the plasma cutter and the TIG separately if I need one later...
But if I never use it then its wasted money.
I already have a MIG.
thoughts?

No TIGger here, but seems to me for general car repair, MIG is perfect. I'd like a TIG but only for welding ally, meaning expensive AC kit. Otherwise there's no point as there's no massive advantage for general meltage. Except the welds look damn nice when done well, and are small and neat.

Generally the ones with TIG cant do Pilot arch/holes unless you buy the expensive one, from what I remember.
Also remember most Plasma cutters need a compressor feed and are 30 Amps plus so if your have a big compressor (30 Amper) running the 2 together requires some serious leccy, however i don't think they require much air.. (A mate figured this out recently LOL)
I am going for the inbuilt compressor type, which can perform Pilot I don't think I have ever come across a point where I needed TIG but hey thats just me.

Glad i´m not the only one who thinks he needs a plasma cutter. A mate of mine has one of those two in one thingeys and is not happy with it... ...probably due to the fact that it was built in the peoples republic of god knows where AK, what would a half decent plasma cutter be costing these days your side of the channel?

Dunno about a half decent one, I was looking at the Chinese stuff on eBay (but from a UK distributor so I have half a chance of having a warranty and a supply of parts etc)
Everything is built in the PRC these days anyway. Some good, some bad.
Entry level seems to be about £220. One with TIG as well is £340. They work their way up in price from there.
They only seem to use 3-4 CFM which is not much air. If I charge up the 150 litre tank on my compressor I guess I have a few minutes of cutting before it kicks back in to charge up again. I would generally only be cutting body or floor metal with it which is going to be down at the lower end of its current draw so I don't think that would be too much of an issue.
The integral compressor is good for portability, but wouldn't be an issue for me.
If anyone has a recommend for a good UK source for a plasma at a nice price I'm all ears. One of the mags (Practical Classics?) did a comparison on some a few years ago and they found a range from about £300 to £500+ as I recall.
I'd for sure looking to the cheaper end, but it will only get occasional use so I don't need to spend £1700 on a fancy italian one.

The plasma cutter i got for work is a self-contained one with built in compressor, so totally portable running off a 13amp plug. Will cut clean up to 4mm and hack through 6-7mm. It's a Hypertherm one that cost us the thick end of 900 quid. Damn usefull thing tho !

Send a Text over to Paul, he had a mate Selling a big one for about 250 if I recall. I bet he still has it.
