Its seems that that small garages are being hit because of the scrappage scheme, as the owner of a little back street garage cold called today because they arent getting any more cheap cars in, and they are having to cold call to try and get more cars. You may wonder why he is having to do this, well it seems that there are very few cheap cars coming up at the local car auctions as all the cars that used to be main dealer part ex's are now going to scrapyards due to the scrappage scheme. So expect to see some of your local garages going to the wall On a lighter note, i said no to the £100 offer for the panda ;D

Must really be developing into a desparate situation for some garages!
Was at a customers house the other day, wasa big manor house and the owner had a good BMW 501 in the garage, serviced regular in Beemer garage etc. etc... long story short, he'd recieved a, possibly (hopefully!) automated, letter from the local BMW dealership offering him £2200 off a new BMW M5 in exchange for the 501!
He obviously said no, but this scheme is making people do funny things methinks.
^^ didn't think cold calling would come around!

its been going on for years in the trade, called prospecting and it does work ! Yeah, but you could tell that this was purely due to the scrappage scheme, as the guy said there used to be around 40 cars per auction which were part ex's, but this number is now down to single figures

its also june, the sun is shining (sometimes) and lots or 17 year olds are taking driving lessons, of course theres a market for small cheap insurance cars - then the guy insults you with a 100 quid offer - why didnt you try to sell him the porka?
i don't think the scrapage scheme plays any part in this - although i don't doubt theres less part-ex'ers around (cars that usually dealers cant get finance on, I think its under 2.5K retail) but i think this is morely likely to be because thrifty owners are holding on to them, rather than new car buyers weighing em in.
i don't believe the scragage scheme is working too well - how many people do you know who have fallen for it? - i don't know any, most are holding out for the price per unit to drop when the manufacturers get even more desperate around january next year.

according to the news earlier this week 60,000 cars have been processed in the scrappage scheme so far. Thats plenty of people taking it up, especially as only a month ago the figues were like 35,000. A mate of mine is chopping in his 1996 VW Polo against a Citroen C4 Picasso under the scrappage scheme and is doing his sums to see if they can chop his wife's Yarris against a new C3 Diesel before the scheme ends.
Both the Polo and the Yaris are perfectly good cars for what they are, the Polo is one owner from new and the Yaris is 2 owners and both FSH, etc. Ideal starter car for a young driver. But will end up as baked bean cans instead.
At my old place I used to get cold called by a coupe of local scrap yards, usually after old batteries or other junk from me and occasionally trying to sell me a Viva or Viscount or Cortina they had just got in.

a trawl of the auction sites revealed there are plenty of cars still going through,687 in the nearest one thats on today, like i said,we do prospecting pretty much every day,and it does work, maybe get 6 appointments out of it,and maybe 3-4 deals out of it.
maybe the garage owner had a punter looking for a cheap first car and was giving his known customers a wee call to see if any wanted to sell.

A lot of people are over reacting about Scrappage. Remember cars are only worth £1000-£2000 in scrappage if you can afford to buy (finance) a brand new car, thats what a lot of people are forgetting. And you have to have owned the car for more than a year. So you can't go buy a £150 cheapy down the auction and trade it in next day for £2000. So Scrappage is only culling cars where people who already own a 10+ year old car can be convinced that instead of buying a 3 or 5 year old used car they will pony up for a brand new one. Or cases like my mate who buys a brand new car and runs it until its dead then buys another brand new one. Amazingly he's only owned 3 cars in his life, one was a 2nd hand cheapy he sold as soon as he could get a new car, the second was written off and the third he's had for 12 years!
I still think its a big fat con and object to it, but meh.

Yeah, but you could tell that this was purely due to the scrappage scheme, as the guy said there used to be around 40 cars per auction which were part ex's, but this number is now down to single figures Wonder if it's affecting the likes of Arnold Clark? They used to send all of their PXs to auction. The scrapage scheme is all very well & good for getting the motor industry up & running plus authorised scrap yards but it appears it could be at the expense of the back street garage mechanic, small independant scrappies & car auctions.

How many people are using their scrappage money to buy a British car?

What? A Caterham or Ginetta? ... or Bristol, can you get H/P on a Bristol? Buying a Toyota or Nissan will be supporting the UK motor industry. Also don't forget that whilst some companies may not construct their cars here components like gearboxes are designed, developed and built in the UK then shipped overseas.

I quite fancy popping into Morgan and even though they don't do any discounts, on any of their cars, would they take £2000 off a Plus-8 if i give them the 924 ;D

Also don't forget that whilst some companies may not construct their cars here components like gearboxes are designed, developed and built in the UK then shipped overseas. So the bloke at Toyota or Nissan keeps his job, and the mechanic at the local garage loses his... but he was on 2/3 of the wages of the ToyotanissanHonda guy, so was paying less tax... clever. Or am I just being an old cynic, as usual... On a related note, on the news it said that UK car production was down 43%, so it looks like the scrappage scheme has just shifted cars that were stockpiled anyway...

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.
