Hi all, new poster but have been reading these forums for the best part of a year now, great little place this. I thought I'd show my car - I bought it at the weekend. Its a late spec Cavalier MK2 SRi 1.8, one of the last before the SRi's became the 2.0i and 130's. I actualluy bought it in Oct 2006 and owned it untill Feb 2008, so this is 2nd time around!! While I had it I took it round Castle Combe and it was on the main display for MIG's 10th anniversary at VBOA Billing 2007. I sold it as I had no choice, I needed the cash and couldnt have it and my Astra GTE sitting around. A new job and the fact Ive had enough of the GTE meant when it came up on ebay a few weeks ago I decied to buy it back from the guy I sold it to. Its not done so well, he stripped it for restoration but is now emirating and the rust has set in a little bit more than I thought it might. Anyway, some pics! As I sold it As it came back!! Plans for the Cav are to go standard restoration on the bodywork, then use a Cally Turbo lump I have along with the F28 and diff from my current Astra GTE16v. Brakes, suspension etc will be played with too. I currently own this 1988 Mk2 GTE 16v and have done since 2004 times move on though and many parts will be shipped accross to the Cavalier. Its a pretty handy track car, I owned the Cavalier while I was building it. Welding is due to start in a few weeks time, its a Vauxhall afterall and Ive had loads of them so I know a few welders!!!

130's are very sought after and rare, worth very good money if they are tidy, but with these Cavaliers you have to be so carfeful with the rot, they are so bad for it. They go very well although I think their reputation goes before them a little bit and the myths about speed are somewhat exagerated. People say the 130 8v nearly as good as the XE/Redtop but the reliaty of the matter is its an inferior engine in every way.
Mini shells are plentiful there, and not for sale. Not many are in that good nick tbh and if they are they are earmarked for something. (not mine!)

I love the mk2 i used to have an 85 sri 1.8 saloon all in all it was a far better than the rubbish 2.0 16v ecotec gls mk3 cavi have now the 1.8 reved higher and had far more low down torque it would climb steep hills in 5th gear with ease from 40 mph the ecotec is rubbish i had to go down into 3rd and only got 60mph on the same hill the 1800 would climb in 5th with the speedo showing over 110 on .and such a strong engine .I have also had 2 1600 mk2 my first car a henna red hatch 1983 4 speed .and the white sallon that cost 100 pound including the cost of the mot it was the worst mk2 i had ever seen bodywise rust all area,s my dad hated it wich meant i kept it as long as posssible it drove great i was annoyed that i had to scrap it it started runnig on three cylinders on the motorway never had any tools and could not do any thing with it .The old girl drove for 11 miles at 70 mph on three cylinders with the temp gauge right off the gauge engine smoking badly but i never wanted to pay to recover it off the motorway and she made it back to swindon where i had it transported by a friend back home .I would love another mk2 1800 sri but the survival rate is so low 99.9 percent have now been scrapped seems hard to believe that such a common car is so rare now ..

Work has finally started on the car, have a good friend doing all the structural welding for me just now. So far Ive had a complete new front panel put on, the whole thing. So many little bits of rust it didnt seem worth doing it any other way. A bit of patching on either side of the boot floor around the sunroof drains has been done too. Work was going well, untill he got to the chassis legs. Got a text saying we had a bit of a problem... The only hold bigger than that is the one fixing it is going to leave in my wallet! Basically, thats under the rear seat near the saftey belt anchorage, the chassis leg has toally dissolved, the bracket you can see there is actually the one for the rear beam. God knows whats holding it on! I have managed to source a new and good chassis leg which from a car being converted to 4x4 (that thought crossed my mind but I cant keep it as original as I would like that way) will be fitted at the bodyshop. More on Monday when I;m going down to strip the bulkhead back to see what thats like, followed by some stich welding and building a new rear mount for the F28 box. Finally, heres another pic I found from first time round in my ownership! Helping front MIG performance Vauxhalls stand at Billing 2007.

Areas left to weld now are out of sight so the list goes as follows; Rear Vallence, inside OSR/NSR Fuel Filler area Rear chassis rail and boot floor Hole by rear seatbelt mounting point the rear wheel arch Corners of boot floor OSR/NSR hole in bulkhead underside of battery tray create new engine mount for F28 6 speed gear box Just a small list there then...!! Its all coming along. Few pics with fresh paint on. All the glass is back in and I'm retro fitting a central locking kit at the moment. Its a slow but ongong project!
