Hi, I should have started a thread for this ages ago but here we go... I bought it from a mate at work in October 2008. It had been left at the side of the road for several months after the cambelt snapped. Also while parked at the side of the road the passenger door was caved in. My workmate had neither the time nor the money to get it fixed and the tax was due so it couldn’t stay on the roadside. I really didn’t need a car at this time but he didn’t want to scrap it. He needed it gone so he kept trying to persuade me to have it for £100. So I did some reading and as the engine is non-interference the cambelt seemed an easy enough fix and being the cheap Porsche I figured I might be able to afford to run it, but I REALLY didn’t want the hassle of another car at this point so I kept saying no. Until he was twisting my arm for only £50, well I couldn’t say no to that. As bought...    |

So with my brother I tried to fix it at the side of the road hoping there was a chance of driving it home. New cambelt on and timed (We Thought).   But we had done it wrong; I hadn’t spotted the correct timing mark on the cam sprocket although I had looked hard for it. In the end I had assumed the mark on the front of face was just a different version of the same marker. So it wasn't running and I didn't know why so we towed it late at night about 5 Miles from one side of Leeds to the other. With the battery dieing about half way it was a bit dodgy without sidelights and the hazard lights very dim at least the roads were deserted at the time we chose. It was quite indignant pushing a Porsche up the drive slope with a rubbish 1996 escort bumper to bumper with just a rolled up rug as a buffer, But it was home  |

A few days later (armed with some RR help) with a proper inspection lamp and some emery cloth I saw the proper cam marker and re timed it on that.   YAY  I was jubilant, so happy.  BUT it was short lived as this happened that very same night just 2hrs later.   I was gutted, I have lived here for 4yrs without incident and touchwood its not happened again but some little toe rag jumped on the bonnet of the Peugeot 309 kicked the window and then ran over the roof of Porsche (shoe prints on the bonnet, glass, roof and tail gate glass). I hadn’t insured it yet as I wasn’t going to insure it till I knew it worked so I was stuffed and somewhat dejected with it all. My escort was done the night after and the door forced open on that too. I didn’t know if I had a neighbour with problem or why it was happening but I didn’t want to fix it just for it to happen again. |

Well I sold a laptop at Christmas which I promised the proceeds of would buy me this which was fitted early January. Windscreen was about £130 Fitted.   So all was good again, well appart from all the bits that don't work! But the important bits were working OK and I was having some fun with it finally.  Rear wheel drive in the snow was fun, also took it to the lake district and all was running well. Although the rear wiper blade fell off with the snow, there are lots a little problems with the Shonky Rocket. |

So I drove it round for a from Jan till Easter weekend, and I'm really loving it. I took it to Whitby on Easter Sunday and the drive there was great, took the roof panel out and had a blast. On the way home, over the tops overtaking was fun. It sounds ace at 4000-6000rpm when booting it. I did think I had overdone it though when a horrible noise developed and at 2000rpm it sounded distinctly like engine trouble. I was relieved to find it to be the exhaust when I stopped to look. The rear support has rusted (sometime before) and the last 4 foot of exhaust must have been vibrating rather a lot as the welds in the front box had cracked hence why it didn't sound like a typical blowing exhaust I had heard before.   Well Andy's (Scaryoldcortina's) welding day back in March ensured I could weld that up as my second welding practice piece (after the fiesta sills success). But by the time I had got that sorted the MOT was out. The other side of the box, my welding is the outer ring (it had been previously repaired I think). Bit messy still but practice is practice.  So it went in for MOT on Sat and was met with a fail...  But not so bad so that brings us up to date... Some jobs to sort out so I can get it back on the road. AAAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH at the mindless vandalism.....makes my blood boil (and then some!) Sorry to hear your tale of woe.....but glad to hear you kept going and got everything back on track. MOT - not too bad. Some bulbs to sort & align, a few brake pipes and some adjustment then you should be good to go. Excellent work - these 924's are really starting to grow on me and it's a shape that really suits silver. Looking forward to seeing it 'on the road' |

I’m afraid not, was pretty quick out of the house but not quick enough. (had to run upstairs for the door key to let myself out). So I didn’t get a very good ID for the police to go on. Saw them actually in the car the second night but only back on and again they legged it quick. Suffice to say they were chavvy kids 14-15 with trackys on. I think the police may have had an idea who it was and maybe had words? But as I didn’t see them properly not much could be done.
Sat here cleaning corrosion off the number plate and rear light cluster connectors at the mo.

I paid 5 grand for an 82' 924 lux back in the day so £50 is bloody good going mate! These are well underated cars. Well built and good handling. Get yourself a set of lowered springs. It'll look ten times better and be even better round the corners. They don't cost much either. The guys who race them have loads of tips that you can take advantage of too.

I bet a 924 back in the day was really luxurious, When the carpets were deep and fluffy and the trim all nice. Unfortunatly this one has weathered bit over 29yrs and 130k miles (ish the odo doesnt work any more) especialy the trim, paint and interior but it still feels very solid and reasuring under foot.
Plan with this one is to get this MOT sorted. Then a general service as I know it had nothing done in the year or so the guy I bought it off had it so who knows when anything was last done. If anyone has any tips as what to renew fire away. I just had a look at the Distributor cap/rota and they looked quite recent and the leads too but it’s hard to tell really. Performance upgrades would be nice, but just getting it working nice and reasonably tidy is the priority first. Brake pads need doing (advisory at MOT) so some slightly better ones might be good start (recommendations?).
Anyway the number plate lights and the indicator are working now.

That is a bargain. Looks good in silver too. Shame about the damage. Little bastids, shame you didn't get hold of the little feckers! Still, you're enjoying it now, what more could you ask for? Good luck with the retest, but doesn't sound like too much. |

Right so after a bit of a delay to get the MOT fail points rectified (and it being sat up a the garage for 2 weeks just waiting for them to retest it!  ) I finally got a fresh MOT on the Shonky Rocket, so I promptly put 12months Tax on it too. So all with all the papers in order I took it for a run out in the sun ;D. And all was well.....Untill the clutch cable snapped! Or to be more precise the plastic hook on the end of the cable cracked. So had my housemate tow me home with the Radient Red Pink Fiesta, How undignified. So back on the road and off again in the same day, ho hum. |

To update.. This morning I fitted the replacement clutch cable. Took it out for a run up to a mates and though great its finally back and running.
On the way back I noticed the temp gauge was maxed out (Dunno how long I had been driving before I noticed) so I pulled over and stopped for 10min while I thought about what to do. I was only 2miles from home so thought I'd risk driving it home. Got home OK.
Anyway had a look under the bonnet and its lost all its water and the radiator cap was partly popped off. Put some more water in and started it up and it made a nice water sprinkler from the water pump, bummer.
It still started OK so hopefully havent done any major damage to the engine, fingers crossed.
So back on the road and off AGAIN in one day, this is becoming a bit of a chore.

Just bought 2 Retro Rides Gathering tickets, so I REALLY hope its just a waterpump now so I can have it ready in time. The other is for my brothers 1989 Saab 900 Turbo so I will be there one way or another I just hope its in the Shonky Rocket.

Water spraying out from the water pump at the shaft...  Got the waterpump off eventually, it was a bit of a pig. One bolt sheared and the remaining stud was some how still holding the pump housing quite tight. It seems to be a bit of a tradition for 1 bolt to shear on every job. So I have it soaking in WD40 till I can get round to tackling it.   Poor old car not so happy at the moment.  |
