I'm giving the engine a bit of a spruce before it goes in, and some of the aluminium components are a little corroded. It's difficult to get a wire brush in to scrub the parts, and I'm avoiding stripping it all down because I'd like to keep the thing in one piece so that things keep moving forwards - I take things to bits and leave them that way all too often! I was thinking about some sort of spray cleaner perhaps? I've Googled but a lot of tips are from Americans who have a bigger choice when it comes to cleaning products (hydrochloric acid off the shelf, for example) and different brands that aren't available here. So, any handy tips? I'm not after mirror-shine show finish, just not flaky and crusty... ;D

I had some gearbox mounts stuck on my Reliant engine box. They were so stuck on I eventually needed to weld a peice of metal on and use that as a lever, then replace them. Anyway, I used a junior hacksaw for removing some of the corrosion out between the mount (cast) and the aluminium gearbox.

Ah, now masonry cleaner rings a bell... pretty evil stuff if I recall but might be the stuff I need...
I'm also worried about harsh chemicals making the aluminium porous. I suppose hosing the thing off thoroughly would stop this.

You have to be really careful with this stuff though as it will blind you or burn your skin.

What about something like tcut, and a long handled bottle brush (like a small bog brush with a wire handle)?
Might not polish too well but it should take off the corosion fairly quickly then hose of the residue.

Mr muscle oven cleaner. Spray it on, Leave it 1/2 hour, poke it around with a paint brush and hose it off. Works pretty well.
