did anyone watch it this week, they bought a proton and it cost £210 to show cheap motoring and he used it for a week
would think that this would put people off getting a cheapiee as the car was a bit of a wreck, door opening on bends etc
he did say hed kept it afterwards and used it for a week and it was totally reliable
hed have been better off paying £400 and getting a polo breadvan, like mine ! and using it for coming up to 4 yrs for a winter hack ,clocking up 30k and only replacing service parts exhaust ,tyres etc its still worth £400 now so thats the cheapest kinda car i bet
anyone else got a mint condition cheapy that has been mega reliable,I'm well impressed by this polo , no rust underneath each mot which is nice too!

They shoulda been able to geta much better car than that... Few years back, while my car was off the raod, bought a Chevette for £200 with 11months T&T. Only had to buy a set of pads for a hole 10 months of care free (and fun) driving. Car eventually gaveout in month 11, but by then I was back on the road and so flogged it for parts on Fleabay. But it does goto show that there are real cheapo gems out there!

funnily enough i said exactly the same thing, "they paid 200 quid for THAT??" you could find twice the car for that money, would have sold them this for that if they'd asked nicely.

I bought a 1996 N reg polo for my GF to learn to drive in 2.5 years ago, it cost £240 and had 6 months MOT and TAX. In that time its had about £200 spent on it, most of that has been on tyres, brakes and service parts. Its not the best looking car, its got a few scratches and dints but its fine mechanically. I still use it today as my golf is off the road. Must have done about 30k in it too. In my mind thats cheap motoring, not buying the first cheapest shead that turns up.

Well the little Fiat panda selecta cost me £300 six years ago, and apart from the little mods (anti roll bar off a Lancia Y10 turbo, Yugo alloys, etc), its only cost me on average £100 a year to run, and thats just for things like timing belt, servicing, etc. Biggest cost was £180 when the fluid and filter for the CVT needed doing and I got the main dealer to do it

Last winter I spun my 1.8 rover 100. I bought a polo saloon for £250 and it lasted me almost a year! No rust on it whatsoever. I only ever put petrol in it and did the headgasket, but that was only weeping oil to the outside and done as a precautionary measure. I sold it to my mate who then sold it on to someone else. Awesome cheap motoring.

this cost me £300 with a years ticket and 6 months tax on it too: 3 years and nearly 50,000 miles later its still sat on the drive and has taken us all over the place, from the lake district to cornwall

Hats off to the programme actually, in the age of scrappage they actually gave a thumbs up to running somthing older and cheap, he really quite liked it against his m3, what other media are actually giving our sort of rides a thumbbs up?

Always remember to take articles in TV shows with a pinch of salt. They are no longer factual....they are there to 'entertain'.
Doors swinging open and ratty piles of curse word are what they want to show.....the producers know damn well that for £200 you could buy a perfectly GOOD car and run it reliably, but where is the fun/entertainment in that?
Just for reference, I bought a Delica for £200 which just needed an £18 brake flexi for the MOT (which I fitted when I collected the Delica, so drove it straight to the MOT station where it passed ;D )
I then stripped out and sold all the rear interior for £500 (turning it into a work van) and the AC system for £200 - so had a free van and £440 cash in my pocket after paying for the MOT
Ran it for over a year when I sold it for £1,000 to buy my current £400 Delica which didn't need anything for the MOT and has been 100% reliable as well. Only outlay has been a few oil changes. Sold the interior and AC system out of this for £600.
This means my original £200 Delica has resulted in a £1,600 cash in my pocket as well as a free van! Now THAT'S what I call cheap motoring......

Absolutely! I didn't see the programme but it sounds as if they were quite positive about running a cheap old car. I've been running around in my £75 Saab for the past few weeks, it's been great! Needs a balljoint for the upcoming MOT but that's all as far as I can see. Chassis is solid and it seems like a well cared for car. I put a couple of tyres on it and gave it a service. I love it!

Does the £100 I paid for my cortina 2.3 GhiaS count? 2 patches, straight through the MOT and the used Daily for 2 years with no break downs at all ? Now on 145K and just come back from a 300 mile trip round Norfolk Or the discovery 200 TDi i got for £100, mind you that has broken down 6 times but never cost more than a tenna to fix using new OE parts ;D

Even my Alfa fits the 'budget motoring' type. Bought it for £475 with tax/mot until March 2010, had to spend £30 on a thermostat (and housing) and £12 on some wiper blades and that's it. Sure, it goes wrong on a fairly frequent basis (the battery died at the weekend and the speedometer keeps cutting out) but it's got working aircon (GR8 4 SUMMA) and is great to drive, as well as cheap. Really, I should put it in for a cambelt as I suspect it's due. But that would cost more than what I paid for the car. DILEMMA!! On the one hand, I know that I'll get a lot of pleasure and mileage out of this car, so I should invest in it. On the other hand, I like motoring on the cheap - but it will go SNAP at some point if I leave it...

i've done over 12000 miles in my £50 saff now. I've spent a bit on sprucing it up. But in terms of parts and things it NEEDED to stay alive, it's been minimal.

Running a £245 Sierra Saff just over 700 miles a week, no problems so far and getting good fuel figures, comparable to a mates much newer focus much to his dismay lol
Ran a £25 Polo breadvan for a year and spent the grand total of nothing on it.
Got to love cheap motoring!
