...I said I was going to Poland to bring back that van?
well, unfortunately, it didn't work out. the engine and gearbox were in a right state and the body need a bit of work.
the van in it's self is great, it's got a 3 speed gearbox, and you have to double de-clutch with a top speed of 60KPH, and an engine in between the front passengers with a flimsy cover over allowing the noise and smell of petrol into the cabin quite freely. Remember that this van was sold in 1980!
having said that, the van was wonderful, it was the best way of driving around Poland...just not quite up for driving across Europe.
Some pics from the road trip,
Picking her up,
Having a rest letting the van cool down (the radiator doesn't work)
In it's natural road trip habitat
Nice pair,
So we got to Poznan which was the last place to back out of it, and decided to not continue. emotions hit a low, me and my dad had made a real bond with this van, and so had my mum who pretended to hate it. not wanting to face upto scrapping the van we were all set to leave it outside the Poznan train station and catching a train to Berlin before flying home, but luckily, our polish friend living in Poland persauded us not to give up...HE HAD A FRIEND.
So, on a Saturday afternoon we drove for 4 hours in this van down one of the biggest most main roads in Poland to this guys house. this guy was a right enthusiast, he had two Wasawa projects having loads of welding done, an early Nysa and a fiat 126 just on his parents drive...plus his FSO Polenz as his daily driver. so, we left him with the van and went to head home when i tripped and really badly sprained my ancle.
4 hours later, we emerged from the local hospital with my leg in plaster. i was in pain and panicing as i had to carry most of the bags as my dad's back was playing up and my mum is having breathing issues...
so, we drove back to poznan in our friends mk1 passat diesel, which has done 300,000km taking only 1 hour...at one point we touched 100MPH in this car - 'interesting'
we were camping, but i couldn't manage in a tent with my leg like this, so we had to check into a hotel. next day, my dad went back to the campsite and packed up the tent.
then we got organising getting home...after 2 days of not leaving the hotel room and discovering we needed a 'fit to fly' certicate i went and got into our hire car Clio to get us to berlin. 3 hours later we were there (how wierd is that, driving to another country in 3 hrs?! ).
anyway, went to hospital in berlin, got the plaster cut off, and eventually got home. I have never ever been so happy to leave and get home...normally, i want to stay in poland, but not this time!
So, anyway, just got these pics from the guy restoring the Nysa, i believe the plan is to let a local college do it...so heres the pics of it being taken to the college,
Our baby!
Check the outfit tho, a tarpan towing a Nysa!
And, as you always have parked outside your house,
A polski fiat 125!
I'll keep you informed on any updates!
