Anyone know if I need any special tools to replace the discs / pads on my MKVI Golf (2000) 1.6?
I know I need to remove the caliper, but need to know if I have to invest in some special tool(s)?

when we did the pads on my brother's 2000 Octavia we had to get a 7mm allen key to open the calipers, its an 'oddball' size not in standard hex key kits. A good auto factors should have them

Cheers for that - is that the same size used for Ford calipers on MKVI Escorts and the-like?

Front brakes should be 7mm alan bolts and rears are 13mm bolts in 15mm inserts, and you'll also need a special tool to wind back the rear calipers if it's the rears your doing (mk4s always sieze at the rear and need plenty of cleaning under the shims.)

Nope - am doing the front. Sounds like I need to get a 7mm allen key Is there enough movement in the caliper to get it off the disc, or do I need to remove the fluid cap so that the caliper pistons can retract back in to the caliper? Cheers Stuyizz.

You'll need to squeeze the piston back with some large grips to get the new pads in but unless the brake fluid has been topped up between services it shouldn't leak out. some of the smaller discs will come off without taking the carrier off if you need to change them as well
