Given the reasonable success of a "make it up as I go along" chopper made at college a few years ago, I'd been hunting for an old bike to do the same to, only better. So. Give this the other other day, sans seat (though I have been offered a seat) And so set about stripping it down: Couldn't remember how you get pedals/bottom bracket off, so I took teh angle grinder to it As you can see, the lower part of the rear fork has been pulled away from the seat shaft, so I've welded in a length of box section: I forgot to take pics during that bit, so thats why its got its wheels back on, to see how it sits. Welds are a bit crispy at the minute, but I will be going over them again and adding some sections of sheet for strength. Next, the forks are getting about a foot of box section added to lengthen, then the lower part of the frame will be constructed for the peddle set up. Stay tuned for updates on a bizzarre project.

As someone who works on bikes all day, I wholly approve of this project. I wish I had the time and bits nowadays to make random stuff like I used to (Got a new manager who made me throw away my stash of bits!) I used to be able to make stuff like this on my dinner: All the best with it - make sure the new welds around the bottom bracket are strong - its a weak area at best and is under about twice as much stress now you've stretched it!

Aahaha! That is awesome! Strengthwise, I have on old 106 bonnet that I use for spare sheet, and its about 2mm thick, so theres going to be some strategic triangles welded in in. About getting the peddles off, I have taken the bolts out of the cranks, and they will not budge. Its been a while since I took a bottom bracket off and I can't for the life of me remember how to, any tips? Thanks

You take the nuts or bolts from the centre of the cranks. Probably need a thin wall 14mm socket. Theres a special crank remover tool to screw into the threads on the crank. Then you screw the centre of the tool to pop off the crank arm. That tool is about £10 tho
I just get a hammer and cold chisel and hit the centre of the crank arm beside where the axle goes into it. Sometimes one tap will seperate them. Othertimes its many blows and the bb lock ring gets mangled.
some bikes, BMXs and cheap MTBs have round chainstays. So easier to extend them

One way to get the crank arms off the bottom bracket is to remove the bolts and ride the bike, but it can take a while, and you'll struggle to ride whats left! Heating them up and giving them hammer grief works, but for the sake of a few beer tokens you might aswell befriend someone at the local bike shop and get them to do the job for you..
I'm a tool hoarder, so Id spend £15 on the tool even if I only needed it once.
Once you have the crank arms off, the bottom bracket will unscrew - theres a lock ring on the left hand (passenger) side, and the right (drivers) side is left hand threaded. Best way to remember it is pedalling forwards removes the bearing cup.

Ive only used heat a couple of times. not really needed that bikes quite modern so might have a cartridge bottom bracket. They really need the splined tool to remove them. might have a normal cup and cone Bottom bracket. The adjustable cup quite often takes a 16mm spanner, yes thats what it fits. The fixed cup on the drive side is something like 36mm spanner size. A pipe wrench can turn it. Those Suntour cranks have the square taper turned a quarter turn. So you cant mix them with other manufacturers cranks.

Looking good my man, make sure you brace it up well as the frame snapping is the last thing you want if you value your curse word. Makes me wanna nick my mates welder and do something with the numerous scrap bikes I have in the garden.
