My skoda fav and estelle are/were both almost rust free, yet on this very site there are examples of both that have almost disolved.
I think there is no escape from the metal mice, just buy a non rusty car and prevent. As others have said.

Late 1960s vintage Imperials. Chrysler put them through a 7 stage rust proofing/painting process and it seems to work - you rarely if ever find a rotten one - at most just a little bit behind the rear wheel arches. They're not slow either - just thirsty.
Mid 1960s AMC/Ramblers can be quite good - I believe the steel in them was of good quality and quite rust resistant.

Depends how retro you want to go. Some early 90s stuff like mk2 golfs and mk2 sciroccos were galvanized to a pretty good standard. They still rust, but it's not that bad. not galvanised at all ....they don't rust like crazy but theres alot of em getting a bit frilly now I heard about the golfs from 'man in the pub', but fairly certainly about the mk2 sciroccos - read that on the scirocco register's website.

Maybe find a solid chassis Scimitar? Not likely to suffer rust on nd panels, being fibreglass.

Current vehicle collection: 2006 Saab 9-3 Aero convertible - in mid-life crisis yellow No new retro as yet ... all attempts to sneak one onto the drive have failed.

lol, maybe it's better the devil u know then! Aren't volvo's sposed to be pretty solid? Supposedly, ive just put a big section in the drivers floor of my 740, the rest is rust free though. They do have some issues of corrosion with the ally tailgates sometimes though ;D

arent the later porka 924s fully galvanised? yep there are, except that they still go rusty around the front jacking points (unlike mine)

I'd second what lufbramatt said about mk3 Passats - largely galvanised and pumped full of wax, they seem to be doing a lot better than most.
I think the above applies to similar age Audis too, like the 80 and 100.

audi80 and 100's were galvanised... so rust is not an issue..
also parts are cheap, because most of the 4 bangers are similar to passat and golf.

Porsche 928. Mostly alloy and the steel bits are triple galvanised. As long as they aren't accident damaged they are close to rust proof.

I would say go Saab/Volvo for that loved/looked after/banger/affordable balance.
They do rust, but the metal is very thick and as long as they have been looked after otherwise, the rust will have been taken care of, or not need a lot to do it, knowing the rest will live long after the rust has been cured.

older saabs still rust, 900's though very good for their time most are reaching that age....My '89 Merc 190 is rust free but I do see some with scabby wheel arches....
I must admit I've never failed on rust on saabs unlike FORDS.....

I'd also say bluebirds. Lower half fully galvanised though you see the odd patch of rust here and there. Best of all tidy models go for silly money; <£100!
